with real oem airboxes being as rare as hens teeth and most aftermarket "performance" filters ending up as a hot air intake with reduced surface area....

im looking for a somewhat oem replacement airbox from a different vehicle thats more available.

ive seen a few on ebay that are similar but im wondering if anyone knows of or has already figured this out before i start buying random airboxes and wasting my money.

thanks

jim

BMC CDA connected to the throttle body with the OEM intake hose/tube. This way the distance between throttle body and filter remains the same. And it sucks up cold air. That is how I have fitted it in my to GTI6 converted phase 1 XSI.

Only thing to keep in mind: avoid puddles. The opening is facing the tarmac… so might act as vacuum cleaner Wink

been there, done that. Sad
fitted the air intake to a fog light hole on my second gti6, drank a puddle, totally effed the engine.
sounded like a bag of spanners afterwards.

ive went and got a 2.2 hdi boxer airbox off of ebay. looked close enough to a stanny airbox but the things waay too big, bloody clutch cable brackets a pain.

its hard to find an oem airbox with the 76mm / 3" diameter, the peugeot rcz airbox looks like a good contender space a fit wise but i cant find its tube diameters....

mmmm tastey, but in all seriousness cant really find much so far.

looking at various 106 and 306 airboxes on ebay, it appears they use the same airbox wether its a 1.4 petrol or a 2.0hdi.... and a fair few others in the range.

they only really change the top tube part, the can and lower resonator box seem identicle. i might go for one of those.

ive ended up using a modified 106 airbox.

had to replace the 60mm "outlet" with a 76mm one on the lid.

cut off the resonator part on the bottom and fitted a flat blanking plate, to make it smaller.

works a treat.
its oval inlet seems larger than a standard gti6 one (or at least larger than the oem oval grill intake scoop), so bonus there.
a bit of maths also shows the 106 filter may actually have slightly more surface area than the standard gti6 one, again another bonus.

note: i think the airbox oval inlet requires a 90mm tube....annoyingly i ony have 76mm atm, so its duct taped on non optimally for the moment. 90mm flex ducting is on order and i might end up using a hot air gun on the oem air scoop to expand it a little for less flow restriction.

in conclusion, cold air feed, more filter area, looks more oem, quieter but stilll nice sounding intake noises......me happy Smile
