Not sure if this should be in here or interior....

Been on a squeak, creak and rattle hunt past few weekends.
The quieter i make it the louder the things i havnt fixed seem to get. Smile

Anyways.....driving tonight I noticed my steering wheel has about 2-3mm up and down play on/in the stalk.
About 0.5-1mm play side to side.

Clamping it in various position with the aduster didnt fix it.

Its too dark right now and its chirstmas tommorow, maybe in the interim untill boxing day somone can let me know what might be effed and how much of a c%$t it'll be to fix please?

urgh. its the bearings. new/2nd column unit ordered.

on the plus side, a quick read of various older threads show this should cure a lot of the weirdness happening with my steering. especially over the bumpy stuff.

new column in today, took about an hour n half...minimal french used aswel Big grin

no more rattle and play, car feels beautiful to drive.

kinda amazed at the difference.

thanks again

guess ill try my luck, dont suppose you also have:

1. interior centre clock with exterior temp readout
2. radiator top spring clip mount things
3. oem airbox and tubing

had a strange thing happen t'other day.

had to take out steering column to dignose the faulty brake light switch. (air vent methods easier)

didnt remove the air bag/steering wheel etc from the column this time....just battery d/c and wiring.

putting it back, it felt "gritty" during some points of turning.

a day later i took off the steering wheel found out one of the two bent tabs of the steering column were rubbing on the back alloy metal of the steering wheel, metal swarf was all in the column bits.

ive removed some of the wheel alloy and the bent tabs using a dremel so all is well again....no contact.

but should i be worried, can anyone guess whats gone on?

i suspected maybe the shaft moved inside the housing/bearings but ive pulled and pushed real hard on the wheel and no movement. :s

I had the exact same thing. It's just a reassembly issue.

Loosen the bolt that secures the column to the steering rack shaft.
Pull the steering wheel towards you.
Refasten column to rack bolt.
