Front coil spring broke.....Replacing front struts Bilstein B4 - Seems straightforward

Bilstein B4 LH Lefthand Front Shock Absorber 22-040657 ...
Bilstein B4 RH Righthand Front Shock Absorber 22-040664 ... Unsure if correct

Coil Springs - Not sure, searched online with OEM Number Sport2 (aircon) = Yellow White Green 5002P9

Springs available even though OE and colour code matches are different lengths

Looking for standard springs and shocks

If you need to keep the same ride height , you can purchase KILEN springs the specific part number that is made for GTI6.The KILEN are made as replacement of OEM with same dimensions and wire thickness.

A good option is to use springs from XSARA VTS (used ones come up for sale) but these springs will lower the vehicle about 2cm.

Bilstein B4 with Eibach -30mm springs will get you at OEM height.

Joep, can you expand on this point?

I understand that B4s are essentially a direct replacement for the OE Peugeot shock absorbers.
If Eibach -30mm springs were installed on B4s wouldn't the car sit at -30mm?
If the -30mm springs do indeed keep the car at the standard ride height, is this because the B4s are gas shocks and the Peugeot ones are oil?
Or to put that another way, is it that the true standard (Peugeot) shocks, being oil, will not exert any upward pressure on the car, whereas the replacement gas B4s do exert upwards pressure, by their design. And therefore in order to mitigate the upwards pressure of gas shocks a slightly lower spring is needed to get back to standard ride height?

This might be the reason for my ride height issues, if true.

What you explain is exactly what I think is happening. There is another topic where I try to find an explanation why the -30mm springs do not lower the car when used in combination with the B4s. I believe it is because the gas shocks indeed push the car back up, thereby undoing the 30mm drop.

I know this isn't my thread but in case anyone finds it in the future; Joep you were dead right. I put Eibach -30mm spings on the B4s over the winder and I've now got the car back on the road for the summer - the ride height at the front is now perfect and matches the (standard) rear. No more monster truck front-end for me...

Yesterday, together with my mechanic I fitted the Bilstein B12 set. The whole strut is about 5cm shorter than the OEM one that came off the car.

Funny: we also fitted refurbished wheel hubs (fusee in Dutch). This resulted in massive toe out! We are not sure if we fitted 306 or Xsara wheel hubs. Well, I now have a tiny bit more camber.

The car sits slightly higher than on OEM springs. But the comparison is off as the old ones became quite soft over 30 years 😅

Could not enjoy it. The new drive flange from Febi had the wrong shape at the side of the engine (inner side is trapezoid instead of conical) to have the drive axle sit flush. So, left the car at my mechanic to fit new ones.

For what I could drive, it felt really good.

Have the car back home! Wow, the B12 set is a nice improvement! Love it! Just the right balance between comfort and stiffness! Also nicely lowered!

Wheel alignment is still slightly off, but will get that corrected in July.

Nice. Am I right in thinking that the B12 kit comprises B6 shocks? When I was figuring out what was causing my ride height issues I thought it would be a great time to upgrade to B6s. Just left it at B4s front and rear in the end - no complaints but maybe I should have put the money towards a B12 kit... What front springs are you using with the B12 kit?

Indeed these are B6 front shocks. I have them fitted with Eibach -30mm springs that come with the B12 kit.

B4 are same size as OEM shocks, B6 are about 5cm shorter.

The B12 kit is a bit stiffer than B4 shocks with Eibach -30mm, but it looks better and the handling is better.
