Hi Folks

brief history..... my own engine (xu10j4rs) spun a bearing and I picked up a 2nd hand engine while my own gets rebuilt.

Before installing I thought it prudent to replace the timing belt etc... However upon inspection it would appear that the timing is "out".

the pistons are not level and using a solid pulley (to negate any error with the harmonic balancer) the bottom pin does not align...

cam timing pins are ok.

any advice in how to proceed? should I time it up correctly and fit it. or is any degree out of time likely to have caused damage..

many thanks

Gerry

pin the cams, take belt off, rotate crank till timing hole lines up, do not make full rotation.

easy.

as for whether any damage is present, only taking the head off and removing the valves will tell. how far out is it?

It may be that the timing is actually ok and the rubber in the harmonic balancer/crank pulley has migrated since the last belt change (wishful thinking?).

If it's any reassurance, when I pinned mine for the first time it was about half the pin width out on the crank pulley and there was no damage.

I'd suggest:
Pin the cams
Remove the belt
Remove the crank pulley
Align the woodruff key as shown in post #7 in this thread
Fit new belt & give it a couple of rotations

Fit the engine and see how you go. Even if damage has been done, it's a temporary engine and it'll probably see you through until the original is ready to go back in.

OP stated he tried a solid pulley and was still out. If cambelt very old, could be caused by stretching?

cambelts don't stretch that much, if both cams pin easily then the standard damped pulley has started slipping the last time it was done, and has slipped a little further since.

the top photo shows how far the timing is out with a solid pulley (from another xu engine and only being used to check timing)

I think welshpug is right. timing is out for sure ( pistons don't line up / solid pulley doesn't pin /woodruff key in crank pulley is not dead on 9 o clock. needs set properly.

no way to tell if it's damaged without splitting it.....or fire it in and hope for the best....

Depends if you bought it off someone who ran the engine and it worked okay without tapping.

If you have the time, replace the cambelt kit and try it out?
