Went to move the car last night, put the clutch down and it just got stuck on the floor. It'll come up by hand but even the slightest touch on the pedal and it springs straight back down. Yep, sounds like it's snapped. As Mark says, check the arm moves on the gearbox when using the pedal. Ignore my above post, I was wrongly informed at the time! A new clutch cable did actually sort it. However last night I took the car out for it's first proper drive since having it back. After around half an hour, it became really difficult to get the thing into gear and you can feel it struggling slightly at junctions with the clutch down. It actually feels like there's less travel in the pedal too. I've just gone back to the garage this morning and they've said that the cable should self adjust so that can't be at fault? They think it's the pressure plate but it's a bit strange that my car never did this before the cable snapping ________________________________________ '01 Astor Grey GTi6'99 Cherry Rallye |

My ATE clutch cable which seems to be the only one available for a LHD GTI6 with a well-known brand on it also has way too much play on the top of the clutch pedal travel. It's self-adjusting and adjusts itself always to this s**t state. I will be replacing it to a OEM one. |

Was a pattern part, but even OEM parts can be faulty. Mine was actually fine almost all the time. It only played up on very hot days after being stuck in traffic. The amount of pedal travel would go down. A couple of quick pushes of the clutch pedal would 'reset'it for a bit but it would gradually get worse. Still not solved this. So we went and replaced the clutch cable again for an OEM one from Peugeot this time. Again had exactly the same problem, stiff gear change once up to temperature.My friend reckons this little bush doesn't look in too good shape and could be causing the problem. Yes, replace both ones. And there is a newer revised design of them available. Get the newer ones! AFAIK they are less prone to wear out from ingress of clutch dust. Unfortunately I cannot access ServiceBox where I am right now but someone should be able to find out the part numbers. |
