Im about to fit a Mocal 16 row cooler but not quite sure what to do with the original heat exchanger coolant lines.

I'm talking about the coolant pipe running from the standard heat exchanger to the rad and the one running up to the top rad hose.

I was thinking i would just blank the one off that goes too the top hose and remove the one going to the rad as I'm planning to fit a new Rad that doesn't have that outlet.

any help appreciated

I have left mine on as it it helps with the warm up cycle and when hot it transfers heat from oil to water so double bonus road driving or track

Mine is also left on. Beware of a few mocal 16 rows with leaking cores. Mine was one of them.

I'm pretty sure there was space on mine with the std heat exchanger, mocal sandwich plate and std length oil filter.

I would deffo remove the original heat exchanger. It makes fitting the cooler a lot harder but I found it doesn't didn't really work that well otherwise.

I've just joined the original water pipe to another running down to the radiator.

Yeah I still don’t understand how having both is going to work the heat exchanger will just keep the oil cooler and stop the thermostatic sandwich plate from operating correctly so therefore you won’t have flow through the oil cooler?? Or am I not understanding this correctly??

im using a thermostatic sandwich plate it only diverts oil to the cooler when oil is above 90c ish

remember the existing cooler can also transfers heat from water to oil too cooling the block

Sadly my thermostatic Mocal sandwich plate went faulty and started sticking and my heat exchanger was leaking so removed both and use a full open circuit now but I wouldn’t advise this for Road driving ...but excellent on track ...I just put cardboard over my 19row if it’s a cold day on track Thumbs up

I had a new 19row Mocal leak also and don’t buy Mocal now I just buy Setrab Thumbs up

its common practice on rally cars to retain both as the coolant always gets to temp faster than oil, which with a heat exchanger can bring the oil up to operating temp a lot quicker, which is a good idea for engine efficiency.

when the oil gets hot it works the other way and dumps heat into the rad, obviously when used very hard there isnt the capacity there to get rid of the excess heat so an additional air to oil exchanger is used.

Really didn't work on my car with the charger, hence why I've binned it off
