The 306 I currently have has always had worse, inconsistent pedal feel than the others I have owned in the past. This has recently gotten worse. It is really slowing me down on track as the inconsistency and sponginess doesn't inspire confidence at all and I'm braking too softly, too early.

I've had it a while and the brakes have been bled many times in my ownership, braided lines all round etc.

So, I have come to suspect that the master cylinder is at fault, and I'd like to change it.

Soon I will be changing over to wildwood calipers, and I am presented with a choice of buying a new, standard master cylinder, or converting to a larger one as per Dan's nice guide:
http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=160426

The larger one also has the advantage of being a bit cheaper but that's not such a concern compared to getting this sorted properly.

Is the larger one going to be suitable for wilwoods, or are they not bigger enough over standard for it to be a sensible setup? Or will both be suitable and down to preference for a longer or shorter pedal travel?

Depends on the size of the pistons in your calipers. Do you still have the servo? Is the vac piping to it ok?
MC tend to work or don't. Could be flex in the caliper brackets, the calipers not quite square or centred on the discs

To clarify: I haven't fitted wilwoods yet, everything about my current braking setup is stock excluding braided hoses.

There's a slight air noise when pushing the brake pedal now.

Is there not a chance of failing seals within the MC?

sounds like vacuum pump/one way valve kinda issues.

failing masters in my experience fail totally.
