Hi all

got a bad leak in my oil cooler circuit, pretty sure its in one of the braided hose unions into or around the sandwhich plate. Today I nipped everything up and TBH found them quite loose so hoped I had cured the problem but I haven't, leak is at least as bad.

What I plan to do is remove the entire oil cooler setup temporarily as the car is my daily while I source new components.

My question is: if I remove the sandwhich plate can I then just screw the oilfilter back on or do I need the oil/water thingy which I don't have? Pretty sure the answer is going to be yes I need the thingy

Need to try and sort this tomorrow as don't have another day off till Xmas and with the nights drawing in it needs to be done ASAP.

Any input from you all will be very much appreciated

Barry

you'll need a short full thread adapter so you can screw the filter straight onto the block if you haven't got the oil/water heat exchanger still.

where is it leaking?

Thanks WP. TBH I'm not exactly sure where it is leaking. It is either one of the hoses or the sandwhich plate itself. Today I removed the oil filter and tightened the threaded part the oil filter srews onto. Was quite loose tbh prob got 3/4 turn on it but didn't over tighten it.

One of the hoses (AN styly fitting) was just as loose, again roughly 3/4 turn.

After that I tought job done, loose bits secured away I go.

But no.

Is the thread out of the block different to the oil filter or just not long enough?

if you had to fit a short thread into the block to fit the sandwich plate bolt then that'll suffice.

Thing is I didn't fit the cooler, it was on the car when I bought it. So assuming the thread in the block is standard I can just fit the oil filter straight to it? Does it matter if it is longer than standard? Pretty sure mine is like this, second pic down

the part in the picture isn't standard to a 6 but if that's what you have the filter will screw straight on.

take it all apart and you'll soon find what you need, its an m20x1.5 thread iirc.

no problem.

I think the most likely place for a leak is usually the dowty washers or o-rings between the adapters and the sandwich plate apart from the hoses themselves.

you will probably have one of these in the block.

and one of these holding the sandwich plate on

Problem solved, at least for now, by removing sandwhich plate and screwing oil filter directly to block.

While it's off going to change to thermostatic plate. Stand by for questions regarding adapter thread sizes lol.

Thanks again WP for your help

I've been warned again thermostatic ones but I think this is one of the timeless debates. Only due to potential for it to break I guess, I'm sure if you buy a good quality one it shouldn't be a problem.

It is a bit of a pain not having one as I had to place my oil cooler strategically to not overcool during normal driving.

Hmm never considered that. TBH I was going to change the plate because it's probably easier than trying to source a new rubber ring for my one of unknown origin and just thought thermostatic must be better.

Was looking at Mocal. I know they aren't the best out there but are readily available at a sensible price

I have had a Mocal thermostatic plate for 7 years now, always worked fine.
