I've bought a pair of cam covers and there appears to be some damage around one of the counter sunk holes for one of the bolts used to fasten it down.

I'll post a picture of the damage later but essentially it looks a bit like someone has drilled a bolt out and gone off the side a little bit and gone through the counter sunk flat area that the washer would sit on.

I've bought these to replace a pair which are leaking around the bolt holes so this is a cause for concern. What exactly prevents the oil from coming out past the bolts? Is there a seal beneath the head of the bolt/washer or can the oil not travel up the shank of the bolt at all due to it sealing lower down?

Normally the gasket underneath should seal the bolt holes to.

By the sounds of it you need a new gasket but I've not seen these gaskets before.

On a 306 gti6 the gasket is part of the rocker cover:

As you can see it does not go around the bolt holes in the middle.

You could use dowty washer under the bolts?

those areas go metal to metal so you shouldn't get oil leaking up them.

yes, a 6mm dowty washer would do the trick, these are some on the short bolts on my head.

This is the damage on the new pair of covers, it is only present on this hole:

The oil shouldn't be getting as far as this bit of damage then if these covers were fitted. I can fit dowty washers for good measure but if it shouldn't be getting there in the first place...

Oil seems to leak very slightly past one or two bolts on just the front cam cover, mainly after the car has been revved highly. On looking closely a previous owner appears to have put an o-ring or something beneath these two to minimise this.

Could this possibly be due to a clogged breather?

As suggested you shouldn't need dowty washers or O rings.

It may be a problem with the PCV system/excessive blow by causing pressure, forcing the oil out.

It would be worth checking the breather plate in the inlet cam cover isn't blocked, and make sure all PCV hoses are clear Smile

Thank you. It's a replacement pair of covers and I'll clear it out. Smile
