just got my car back from the mot station.

i failed on one item. Sad subframe mounting area is excessively corroded offside front

essentially its the little bracing peice near where the fuel pipes run out the engine bay onto the flat underside.

mot man qouted me 150 to weld in a new piece......

so i had a go myself (blame ed china on wheeler dealers)

needless to say i used an ALDI arc welder to weld a new plate on......

my welds are messy, blobby, to big, but functional.

but as the title sugest i have a few blow holes "to proove how good the penetration is"

do i
leave them?.....fill them (with filler)? fill them (get my mate and his proper tig to weld fill)?

being a lazy bas**rd i just want to leave them.......but in doing so can mot man fail me?

thanks for your help
jim

Well stitch welding(weld an inch, miss an inch etc) is generally stronger then seam welding so I doubt a few little holes would matter.

The plate should be full welded to a good standard
You can't spot weld it on or weld a inch and miss a inch etc

Stitch weld isn't stronger than seam weld I'd get it done properly Jimmy. Smile

More weld is obviously stronger. Provided it is layed down properly. A weld should not be messy. If it's bobby it most likely has not stuck it properly. Grind it back off, do it again and fill the holes. Holes look sloppy and instil much faith for the mot'er. Make sure you grind back to as much fresh metal as possible. What sized rod are you using?

thanks for the info.....

im using the smallest sticks i have 1.6mm.

its not blobby as in patchy. more like as in there are sections of thick weld, and sections of really thick weld. and a few pea-ish sized holes

http://www.motuk.co.uk/mot_appendix_c.htm

had a read of this..... lot of ..... what if and buts.....

but as far as i can make out from it all.....
spot welding is fine if the part your replacing/repairing was spot welded.
the old peice im doing seems either spot welding or bonded or both (or all three at the same time)
might need someone on here to clarify. http://306oc.co.uk/forum/archive/index.php?thread-3767.html not my car or thread but same rusty part/area ive replaced

then the genral jist on that mot page seems to be if the repair is as strong (or better) than the orignial part let it pass.

then section 11...... says basically if you cant tell how the repair was done (due to excessive underseal possibly) pass but advise

what ive done is very much so sound, and very much so overkill on strength, its just not pretty.

im tempted to silicone fill the holes i made and underseal hide the uglyness.

I would grind back oversized welds to make them more uniform. If the look good the mot'er will have a harder time moaning. So make the welds more uniform, get rid of spattering personally would fill the holes. Just be sure to knock of the slag on the welds and back to back tack to fill the gaps.
