Right recently bought a low boost'6, I'm using my old mans account as I'm being tight :Whistle Whistle

I'm going to be starting work on this soon aim is fast road/little track usage. Looking for oem+ sort of thing.

First job I'm looking to do is de-rust and paint the engine bay in situ.

I'm most likely working my way from front to back buying bits as I go along Smile

Will upload pictures as I go along Thumbs up

So first question what are people using to remove rust... Obviously wire brush etc.. but gel/treatment wise whats the best?

If it's small enough to go in a bucket, then Bilt Hamber Deox C. If it's bigger, then the Deox gel

So detox c I guess is better but the part needs to be submerged in the stuff? And the gel is just for general stuff?... and hydrate 80 what does that do? Not sure what you mean by makes it solid again?

Thanks for the info though as soon as I know what the hydrate 80 is will be ordering the stuff and a big pack of wire brush attachments Smile

The deox c you make up a solution with it and just dunk stuff in it for a while.

The gel you use on things like the underside of the chassis for example. Stuff that's not moveable or too big for a bucket

Just looked at it mate, lots of work has gone in to it.

Seems to be this sort of process:

1. Clean as much rust off as possible
2. Use some de rusting gel... Ben what's the best you've used?
3. Noticed you used a zinc primer (without reading every single post what would you recommend?)
4. Stone chip (same as above)
5. Then just normall car color paint?
6. I noticed then you used a heavy duty lacquer (same as above) what sort of drawback and advantages are there of using heavy duty stuff?

Sorry I know this is a lot to ask for and I appreciate your time.

Not sure how far I'll go with it just see what happens because I'll most likely get carried away Razz

Deox Gel best Ive used. By a long way.

Primer was Bilt Hamber Electrox primer. s**t loads of zinc in it. Very heavy!

Stone chip - depends on the finish you want. I hate the wavy finish so went for the 3M flat finish stuff.

I started painting with a rattle can as a test. Have since found someone who is gonna spray the underside and and engine bay in 2k paint and lacquer it. The heavy duty stuff I used has no drawbacks other than you could really do with a mask when spraying it. Advantages are, it's heavy duty!

Can the zinc primer also be left on for awhile? Because I'll most likely do patches in the engine bay eg. front cross member first, then move on to batterybox area etc.. then paint all together

Yeah, brushed it on.

Issues were only due to poor prep. Couple of bits I'd not cleaned off the deox gel properly. If you do go the bare metal route, Defoe get some xylene thinners and mix up a thinned down batch and do all the seams and.joints first. It's quite thick so thinned down helps it flow into the seams etc. I haven't finished he underside yet but I think when thinned with 10% xylene, it is deffo enough to do the underside of the chassis. Probably the engine bay too. Thinning it helps reduce the brush marks too.

Also was wondering behind the upper horn there's a electrical connection would it be ok for me to disconnect to clean?

I ask as I am pretty poor with electrics, and I don't really want the immobilizer resetting its self or something and forgetting codes or not starting etc...

And the other question I wanted to ask is whats the black box attached to the top? If anyone know it would be appreciated Thumbs up
