I've tried searching but nothing relevant has come up.
Basically the car has been stored for years, now when it gets up to temp the cam pulleys are rubbing against the plastic cam belt cover between the head and pulleys. It only does it when it warms up and I have taken off the front half of the cambelt cover so I can see that its defo the pulley and not the belt that is rubbing. I can upload pics later if that will help?
Any advice is really appreciated! It will never see the road again at this rate!
TIA

there's two types of cover depending on age.

also check if its had a gasket change that it doesnt have tabs poking through at the timing belt end.

Thanks for the replies.
So nothing that could be wrong with the pulleys themselves? Is it legal/sensible to completely remove the cover?
What would these tabs look like? Actual part of the HG? Another point to note is the rocker gasket has failed (smoke from oil burning off exhaust), could the rocker gasket be pushing against the cover from behind like you mention of the head gasket?

no rockers in xu engines.

cam covers have non replaceable boneed seals, add a small smear of rtv to help, make sure surfafes are free of oil and leave till cured

No idea of what my next step is, tbh removing cam belt etc is more than I can do, might just have to admit defeat and scrap her.

ah, its an S16.

same applies, check the bolts are all present, and that the water pump or any tensioner is not misaligned.

Quite common for the plastic to bow with age, Replacement is the only option, Cam cover gaskets are around £60.00 for the set, gasket, and seals
Get stuck bring it down

Thanks for the help, can I still buy the plastic cover new? Is it a cambelt off job to remove it?
I would love to bring it to you but with this problem I cant drive it or get it MOT'd. Got spare cash to spend to finally get it back on the road and it battles me every step of the way.
Just had new (second hand) rear beam, solid mounts, brand spanking ABS sensors and rear load valve. Now this noise and smoke burning off the exhaust into the cabin through vents.
I'm too stubborn to give up on it (used to love this car when it was running) hence why its sat in a garage since 2010, but this is really pushing my limits now.
