Lots of makes of cars are fitted with these from the factory. Both in the engine and the gearbox. They do what you think they would. They pick up and remove iron deposits from the oil and prevent them being recirculated round the system. There will 'never' be enough of them to block the pick-up though. Unless your engine is FUBAR but you will probably have been hospitalised because of your ears bleeding before oil starvation occurs.

If the accountants that effectively run car manufacturers agree their cost then they probably are effective. I bet they don't cost 10% of that to them though.

regular servicing with proper purflux filter would be better

Agree. No substitute for regular maintenance. They are there to pick up deposits before the filter system though. They are possibly an attempt to prolong service intervals
