I've got a hard to explain question. I'm doing a timing belt replacement. I've locked and pinned the cam sprockets and undone the bolts. This is the current picture of the cams:

My question is about the bit highlighted in red. Is that piece part of the cam sprocket or attached to the camshaft? I'm trying to work out if it's possible that whilst moving the loosened sprocket to tension the belt it could have moved that piece highlighted in red and thus shifted the pin a tiny amount BUT NOT have moved the cams. Thus meaning when I tighten up the camshaft sprockets again the pin won't line up even with the cams in their correct position.

That locates into a slot in the end of the cam. The only way it could come out and move without the cam moving is if you undid the centre bolt much too far.

The idea is the tab holds the camshaft solid and the pully is free to move when you tighten the belt. You should always turn it as far clockwise as you can before putting the belt on.

If their tight with a loose bolt I sometimes take the pully off and rub the inside down with emery cloth. Also a tiny tiny dab of grease helps. The belt will then tension evenly.

If the cams move when you take off the pully they will have just twanged to a position under less tension against the valve springs. Just turn them back the way they twanged DO NOT TURN THEM THE OTHER WAY or you will bend valves.

Thankyou so much for your reply it makes me feel much less paranoid! And yes, one of the cams actually did spring a little bit around and made a quiet clunk when I was fiddling with a pin but I rotated it back to where it was.
