Whats the difference between the S16 rods and pistons to the GTi6 rods and pistons. I always thought they were pretty much just the same engine.

I cant seem to find any figures for GTi6 rods or pistons but i have found out figures for S16 rods... I think. Can anyone share some info please? I know there are loads of threads about building a 2044cc bottom end with 88mm crank and S16 rods and pistons but would like to get sizes ect before i head out and buy some as i already have a 88mm crankn to hand and my spare engine out of the rallye whats in need of a rebuild.

Dimensions i have found for the S16 rods:
Center to center length - 152mm
Big end diameter - 53.7mm
Small end diameter - 22mm
Big end width - 24.15mm
Small end width - 19.5mm

If the above is right can someone tell me the same as above for a GTi6 rod please?

S16 used 152mm rods with a bushed small end, circlips to retain the gudgeon pin in the piston.

Piston has a flat top which sits 1mm below deck, with pretty beasty cutouts for a standard piston, however they are quite heavy, specific dish I don't recall but due to a larger chamber in the head and the same thickness gasket the volume is smaller than the gti6.

gti6 used a 158mm rods, a shrink fit gudgeon pin, shorter piston to go with the longer rod and made quite a bit thinner than the old S16 unit, tiny cutouts and a small dish rather than a flat top.

the big end bearings can be swapped over though they arent the same part number for o.e.

So there is plenty meat in an S16 pistons to cut for if i wanted to fit better cams.
Would it not be possible to run gti6 rods and pistons with the 88mm crank then since the rod is longer but piston is thinner than the S16?
Sure i seen somewhere someone was running an mi16 crank with gti6 rods and pistons

the gti6 piston comes up to the top of the deck and the crowns are too thin to take much material off them so you can't go pushing them up another MM.

could well have been a 2.0 MI crank, which is the same as a gti6 Big grin

Think it was a 88mm mi16 crank but ran a 2.1 cometic head gasket

gasket makes no difference at all.

tbh youre better off doing it properly or not at all, given the difficulty in finding decent S16 pistons these days, and they're pretty heavy old things too.

what exactly are you trying to build?

I just though if i can build a bigger bottom end for pretty cheap they why not. I know its hard to find the S16 rods and pistons but just trying to find a bit info to see if its actually worth doing. Just fancy building up the 2044cc bottom end really as i have a spare block and a 88mm d.turbo crank to hand. Not sure on the rest of the engine just yet but quite fancy a 2.1 supercharged engine maybe but will be as and when i can afford it as with all projects...

not sure there's much point if youre running boost tbh, either strap the blower to a stock git6 engine or build a high boost.

True just something a little difference and surely it will give a better torque curve. Will hopefully see abit of track action too. I did think about the 3.0l v6 engine but just cant pull myself to do that to the rallye

If its a track car and no restriction on capacity I would build a 2.2 n-a engine, will sound so much better IMO and use less fuel, easier to drive very quick and can be used on the road if its built properly.

You'll get close to the torque of the charged engine but a wider band, even on mild cams you'll not be far off the peak power of a low boost.

It will be mainly my daily with the odd track day when i get time. 2.2 N/A would be nice but a lot of work where the charger is just simply bolt on and go. Just fancy a charger as i have never had one yet. Just like the fact of building a 2.1 bottom end for the time being with a standard top end till i can afford better shiny bits. Just thought with already having a block and crank all i will need is some S16 rods and pistons, new bearings and rings and hopefully build up and its ready to use for next to nothing then i can decide what to do after that.

No!

My pistons and rods alone were £1200

I'm afraid whatever you do a bigger cc engine won't be cheap.

As WP says you could build a 2.2 'mild' engine and I bet it'll be quicker than a LBSC day to day plus on track.
