Just whipped my diff apart to change my diff bearings and found that the inside of the cover is cracked badly and isnt far from flaking i dare say. So basically im looking for a cover that doesnt have as much crcking inside, anyone help me out?

Are you sure it's cracking not casting marks? You get them all over the inside of the box. Often see them inside the bell housing and you think oh f**k the box is cracked but look closer or rub it down with something and it's just casting marks.

Its not cracked right through but the inside is cracked what looks to be heat vracks to me?

probaqbly just poor casting finish, I wouldnt worry about it unless its actually leaking.

they are line bored anyway so you can't swap them about.

Be fine and your crown wheel is fine :-) have you used gasket sealer on the diff housing?

Yea pete ive got sealant for when it goes back in. Just want to make sure all is correct as cant afford it not to be Smile cant find any info on fitting the diff with regards to the shim? Cant even find a figure for checking end float? So im going to rebuilt it like it came apart oe just the new bearings and seals

I was thinking exactly the same..... Currently waiting on a diff and wondering about the shim etc but presume if there's one in there then refit all as it came apart and that's that.

Well both mine and petes had no shim fitted so im planning on rebuilding qithout one. Would be interesting to see if your box has a shim fitted??

most of the 5 speed boxes didn't have one but all the 6 speed ones I've had apart did.

God dam Mei now i have doubts Smile definately no shim fitted in mine or petes? Would you no the endfloat specs at all? As a shim set from.pug is anout 20 quid so i would buy a set if i knew the tolerance

Will see sooner or later if mine has one. Mines a very early phase 2 got 145k on the box and it's never been apart so will be built to factory spec

Ive just spoke to quaife and they said to fit the diff with shims if it has shims fitted but if there were no shims on removal then fit the diff with no shims

same here, the 205 haynes workshop manuals has the end float/preload specs.

Ive ordered the shim set from the steelers anyway just incase. Fancy sharing the info Mei as i cant see it in the 306 haynes

Did some searching online and perhaps this is the reason both me and Pete had no shim fitted in our riffs

Mine definately didnt have one fitted pete. Looking at the link ive put on it must only be the most earliest of be3 boxes that had them. No shim came out so no shim will go in. I assume you have covered enough mileage in yours to know that all is well yea?
