The 306 is going to be a second car and will hopefully have every little niggle fixed now that it doesn't always have to be available to go to work for the week, as I put a deposit on a new daily driver today which I'll collect tomorrow.

I've bought a Ford Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 TDCI, nicely specced with digital climate control, heated front screen, big computer satnav thing that seems to do everything a normal radio does but in a much bigger, heavier package with an unnecessarily large touch screen. I'm an engineer...couldn't resist the gadgetry! LOL

It is also in a good colour in my humble opinion!

Good choice mate. Grandfather in law runs that engine in a ghia fiesta of the same Reg and he's always raving about it. If we didn't have the dog this would be the next car on my daily drive shopping list. 60mpg, £30 tax, looks good, has a good owners club (zsoc.co.uk) that's quite active and there's plenty of parts out there to tinker around with it.

Thanks for the nice comments.

I'll not be modding it, at least not for the first year of insurance. I'm only 23 so I'm still being bent over a table a little bit by insurance companies. I'm somewhat time-limited these days so I need something that doesn't need me underneath it every couple of weeks that just goes and doesn't cost much to go to work in. This will achieve that whilst also being nice to look at, comfy, and a bit fun when I want to be a bit immature!

I've heard they go very well when remapped. For now it will stay as it is and this will allow me to do jobs on the 306 in stages and get that all sorted.

Was an awful lot more than I wanted to spend but after a few years it will have paid for itself in fuel savings over a gti6!

I'm excited to give it some real driving as I've obviously only done a test drive so far!

Only advice would be if it's got the PSA 1.6 16v HDI engine then use fully synthetic engine oil and change the oil and filter fairly frequently. The oil feeds get clogged up easily and cause all sorts of problems but easily avoided with frequent changes Thumbs up.

Thanks, so I've read actually.
Are they fairly easy to service? Oil filter and drain plug etc. easily accessible?

Might give it a service and new glow plugs and any other small things that might be a good idea to replace. I've heard injector seals are a failure point as well but not sure how cheaply these can be replaced. Seal kits shouldn't be too expensive but I wonder how easy they are to change on this engine.

A well serviced and correctly running DI engine rarely needs its glowplugs to start the engine outside of a Scandinavian winter. Our D5 starts without them perfectly well. If you have no starting issues with the Fiesta at all then don't replace the plugs just for the sake of it: you'll be wasting money. The engines aren't like old IDI units where semi-regular plug changes made a difference... If you are having starting issues, the culprit is just as likely to be a leaking injector than a glow plug: perform a leak off test to check before shelling out for a set of new plugs.

the injector copper washers aren't expensive, if they've already leaked that's when you can get issues.

as mentioned, good oil of correct grade additives etc is important in these engines.

blank the egr and get a map on it, best initial mods even if you're not after more power.

Ok fair enough.

I just cannot afford to modify it at all for the first year, already having to get insurance with 0 NCB due to using mine on the 6. I know these modifications are difficult to detect but I cannot afford to take the risk and it is illegal not to declare.

cant you find an insurance company that will mirror your NCB onto a 2nd policy
i did from my daily to a new 6 policy

No, I looked quite hard. Everyone who said there were mirroring it couldn't match comparison website quotes with 0 ncb.

A lot more companies will mirror across a multicar but my 306's insurers gave awful quotes for another car whilst 'mirroring'.

I need to save money, so Iwon't be modifying this at all for the first year, then I will try to get both cars on a single, multicar policy for specialist/modified cars with the hopefully then 4 years of NCB with the 306 and get them both cheaply, perhaps with greenlight or similar.

Collected this today, it's comfy, nice, climate control is great and demists the screen instantly and I averaged 59.2MPG on the way home.

The oil feed pipe clogging is more of an issue on DPF equipped cars but good oil and regular changes never hurts.

These are great fun little cars. I had a MK7 90PS ZS TDCi myself before I got my Rallye. A good remap really brings them alive and helps with economy too. Best average over a full tank was over 80mpg, only the one tank though as was very boring!

Being a non-VNT turbo the power isn't very flat but more like a petrol encouraging you to rev it to the limiter and once mapped to around 120hp it is well worth the extra diesel.

I would love another one but as I'm still paying off the last one as well as the rallye I won't be getting one any time soon.

BTW agree that is a good colour to have

Sea Grey is the best colour for one of these, and the digital climate control is a very rare option. Good car!

The Mountune MRD270 kit is well regarded on these, and it's not too expensive. Greenlight insurance also do deals for Mountune kitted cars IIRC.

I'm probably not allowed by the mods to advertise, but the Fiesta Owner's Club is a good resource, and there's loads of useful info / discounts on there (I know one of the site owners).

In my experience the egr valve only needs blanking if its a problem, I'd get it remapped had my conect done when it was 6 months old and it had a lot of warranty repairs and ford never mentioned it once 👍

Thanks for the comments everyone. I appreciate all advice given.

Yes the digital climate control is great!

I don't think much of this touch screen HU upon further use, the screen quality is average and the sound quality is average if I'm being generous, and is probably worse than OEM.

I've seen the Mountune remaps online. I'll drive it and maintain it for a year and then see where I am. If at that point I've gotten it insured with a specialist I might get it mapped and change little bits.

Tbh it is just a mile muncher at the moment, the 306 is the fun car.

My all time average since owning this has been 63.0 MPG so far, but it is gradually rising all the time.

Slashed my commuting bills massively given that I get 2 weeks on 38-40 pounds of diesel in this and was getting 1 week of commuting out of 50-60 in the 306!

Still really happy with the car, it is great on country lanes.
CC and 6 gears and it would be utterly perfect.

Gave her a well-deserved clean. It's just been eating up miles and ever since I've owned it I've got an average consumption of 67.3MPG at the moment. It does the job of getting me to places for not a lot of money fantastically!

It no longer has the strange chinese touch screen unit: it has been swapped for my alpine with steering wheel controls. Much better SQ and can actually pick up more than 1 radio station. Big grin

Has anyone changed glow plugs on one of these before? ZSOC has some vague directions as to where they are and that they're a pain but I'm not finding a guide or any good pictures on there.

Secondly, any ideas on how to see whether or not injector seals aren't sealing properly? I have closely looked around all the bases and there doesn't appear to be any carbon build-up. Could I spray wd40 or carb cleaner around the bases and see if idle changes or if it bubbles?

It is smoking white on cold starts and running a bit rough for 30sec to a minute, the smoke smells of unburnt derv. I'm suspecting glow plugs, but possible suspects could also be the EGR or injector seals. I can check the EGR simply by blanking it off and seeing if that solves the issue, which I'm planning on doing soon.

Asking here because ZSOC seems great if you like sikk intercoolers m8 and not great for technical help.

I belive once the cars started the glow plugs have nothing to do with the running, pretty sure in burnt diesel is black smoke at least that's what ive been told

Glow plugs are located at the back of the engine, there will be a large relay located in the bay somewhere, it will be easier to test them from here rather than trying to get to the plugs, a diagnostic test will tell you if a glow plug is down.

The plugs are not used to start the car believe it or no they are they to get the exhaust temps up to do a particle filter regen etc.

The rough running on start up will be air in the fuel lines, the air filter bobbins break and the vibrations on the filter box put a small hole in the diesel pipes located underneath and cause this issue, the pipe work is about £120 to buy.

Any questions ask away, I see these engines in various cars everyday. Also if you do go to change the glow plugs be careful as they snap and once that's happened it's a head off job.
