Hi gents

I've been paranoid since the day I bought it but it's sounding particularly rough today so would appreciate your thoughts...

She's an old girl, done 159k miles, serviced every 5k miles, golden oil, doesn't burn any, doesn't smoke, goes well (equal with a clio 172), starts without fail, but God it sounds like a bag of nails!

It's also had a richw rebuilt head and 16 new valves back in 2011 (8k miles ago)

It's done one Trackday in my ownership and will be doing another in feb, just hoping it'll keep going. Ultimately trying to establish if it's just sounding well used or a 'tapper' or just about to die lol

Definately doesn't sound normal !the few things that I've had before that can contribute were a loose plug ! Worth checking those. and also checking the exhaust manifold. The nuts could have come loose. Try that. For now perhaps ?

A blow where the exhaust manifold meets the head can make it sound like a 'tapper'.

Would be worth inspecting, and possibly replacing gaskets and tightening up.

Also, it's always been run and continues to be run on 5w40 fully synthetic, could that be it? Ie too thin when hot?

Not sure the phone picks it up well enough, it's definitley not that kind of metallic knock (I think/hope/pray)

Definitely sounds like it's blowing to start with.

Put your head down by the sump and listen to see if the noise is louder. With a bottom end you usually get the nasty rattle just as you take the load off and the revs level, luckily you don't have that so hopefully that's not the problem

Ok will so, thanks all, bloody hope it is blowing and not anything more serious. That said it doesn't have that lift off rattle of a bottom end or it increasing with revs

Generally it's a pretty noisy old engine, are they all like that?

They usually tap a bit anyway but it isn't usually that loud. I would definitely check plugs and then try get it on a ramp to inspect the exhaust manifold.
