Hi all,

I'm still working through the logistics of sticking the xu10j4rs into my cabriolet and I've got four rad cowlings - one for the non aircon xu10j4r from my cab and three (!) standard '6 aircon cowlings.

The bog standard 2.0 cowling only has one central fan, and a much simpler arrangement - 2 wires connected in the multiplug, and another couple of wires leading off to a temp sensor screwed into the rad. Since the '6 radiator has a blanking plug where the sensor would plug into, it looks like it should be quite easy to fit the single fan cowling in place of the twin fans and bitron controller.

I can think of a few advantages to this:
1) Simpler arrangement so much less chance of things going wrong (e.g. failed relays, multiplug corrosion, etc)
2) Better airflow to the rad when the car's moving
3) It'd be a bit lighter

But are there likely to be any big disadvantages, e.g. confusing the ecu because there's no bitron connected, or worse, inadequately cooling the engine when it goes to over 96 degrees?

theres something wrong with your cooling system then, or the fans arent working properly, if theres no ac you only need one (unless its a td)

Agreed, my non-aircon gti6 only has one fan and temperature is spot on sitting in heavy traffic day in day out.

2 questions....

1) ive done the ac button mod, is there anyway to bridge it so both fans come on rather than one?

2) mine has all the ac crap in there that i'd love to remove, if i were to remove the ac rad, will the ac/twin fan cowling still sit there ok?

You may remember my 6 page thread on overheating, its still not fixed, nobody can work out what is wrong, fans both good, replaced relays, replaced bitron (got another coming just in case), wiring all seems good, earth looks ok....) i only have the ac button to override and run the one fan at high speed if giving it beans. Thats all fine on track (oil temp gets high but fixing that with cooler) but in traffic temps soon rocket with no low speed

Right ok, nightmare, could the bitron unit be responsible for the 2nd fan not working even when ac mod in place? - i desperately need to fix this Sad

double check the 3 relays Wink
if you get high speed with one fan only i would say the other fan motor is faulty

you have a different problem if one fan won't cool it enough.

nope both work fine, if i bridge the 2 pins you mentioned in the other thread the other fan spins up just fine! (its a brandnew motor..)

Welshpug, in terms of cooling, i have no low temp fan at all atm, so in traffic it goes up to 90+, with the ac button putting one on at high speed it will slowly bring it down to 90 again (and below) but thats been in the months of Oct - Now so coolish weather, hot weather worries me....

I thought they all went up to 100-ish then the fan kicks in and cools down to 95. Then repeat until the traffic clears?

Oops, bit late replying to this, but I've shoved my fan relay box and bitron on Ebay if you need them for testing / diagnosis; drop me a message if you still need the bits and you can have them for a tenner plus postage

D'oh, the bits sold on Ebay shortly after you posted this.

You could try the mod I suggested at the top of the post and wire the 'non working' fan directly to a standard temperature switch and power feeds - both the '6 rads I've got have a blanking plug where you could screw in a non-aircon 306 temp switch.
