Had fun with my old 3.0 V6 D8/XFZ non-VVT (194hp) engine. Fancied a change. Now fitted a 3.0 V6 D9/XFX 210hp with Variable Valve timing.

Anyone done this before ?

seen one in a 205, ran on emerald.

ive heard it is possible to alter the multiplex ecu to run without being in a multiplex vehicle, but any further details are particularly sparse.

ive been in a d9 406 and its character was quite different to the d8, quite a lot smoother and revved out a bit further, noticably quieter cruising along, intake note different too.

d8 has similar traits to its intake note to the j4rs intake, a kind of metallic trumpet bark.

And does it go much better? The d8s always seem to make more power than the advertised 194bhp

Only just about got everything in and working tbh.

I'm running the D9 engine, plugs, coils, inlet manifold, injectors, fuel rails but with the D8 ECU, loom, sensors, flywheel, clutch, mounts, exhaust, throttle body etc.

Hoping to sort out a coolant leak somewhere near the thermostat housing, connect the VVT actuators to my DET3 piggyback ECU and then ponder what to do about the bonnet; it won't close because the D9 heads are deeper than those on the D8 !

I'm hoping to get it tuned and dyno'ed at some point. Looking for 225bhp+

I'll post the results if you guys are interested.

All this effort for 16bhp more really doesn't seem to have been worth it (although I haven't driven it yet!)

Welshpug, that's a really interesting comment "....intake, a kind of metallic trumpet bark..." because the inlet on the D8 IS metallic, where as the D9 is plastic !

The theory is that the D9 (due to VVT, higher compression ratio and better head design) will allow more power to be extracted at the top end. It revs up to 6500rpm quite easily, where the D8 is all done around 5500 ish.

What makes me laugh is that the D9 engine weighs 10kg less than the D8, but they chose to add 2 more cats (3 in total!) weighing almost 10kg each - pointless.
Obviously they've all been removed :-D

Yeah, the D9 in most "V" reg 406's still uses the Simplex (easy to deal with!) wiring. Thats what I used for this conversion. Its still amazing just how many things change between two almost identical engines.
Even the top engine mount, cambelt kit, tensioner and waterpump is different between D8 and D9 engines. Why?

probably because the early one was far too complex and expensive LOL

i do believe porsche had a hand in developing the engine for its second generation.

Anyone got any proper video's of V6 306's? I'd actually be interested in one.

I do of the speedo.

I crashed mine but got everything to repair it as loads of spares but im thinking of selling up and getting a 3.2 V6 Audi

Might just strip and sell for spares but i may put up as a whole as it be a waste being i got the conversion done not even 2 years ago by pug1off and spend thousands on wheels and tyres and solid this and that etc etc
