The RB5 was originally purchased by a Mr O’Kane from the Nottingham area in June 1999 and originally bared the registration number T111 RBO (TURBO)
Mr O’Kane had the RB5 for two years before it was purchased by its second owner Mr Whelan, also from the Nottingham area. Mr Whelan kept the vehicle for 12 years and maintained her meticulously.
In 2013 Mr Whelan part exchanged the RB5 for a brand new VW Golf GTI at a VW dealership in the Essex area. It was then purchased by Mr Hodges from Loughton, one of the dealerships master technicians.
Mr Hodges owned the vehicle for a brief spell however, due to a change in work circumstances, was forced to sell the RB5 resulting in my purchasing the vehicle in July 2013.
I have owned the RB5 for the past 15 months. In that time it has been my daily drive and, as you would expect from a well maintained Subaru, has been totally reliable. The reason I am now selling is due to a substantial increase in my commute to work from 40 to 100 miles a day and so a more economical vehicle is sought. I also feel given this RB5’s condition/ history/ mileage it deserves to be garaged and kept as a second vehicle.
It took me months to find a standard unmolested RB5 last year. Many I viewed were rotten, covered in dents, had been modified, played with and thrashed. I travelled 300 miles and 6 hours to view this RB5 in Essex and she stood head and shoulders above the other examples Id viewed. This RB5 has never has a dump valve/ induction kit/ decat fitted as these can cause damage to the engine. The only modification this RB5 has is a tasteful stainless steel back box. It retains its original downpipe/ centre section catalytic converters.
Exterior.
Finished in gorgeous ‘Steel blue’ 86F unique to the RB5, the paintwork is lovely with a deep glossy shine. I regularly wash and polish the paint so it retains a deep lustre. The RB5 does have some stone chipping to the front bumper/ bonnet commensurate with age/ mileage however, I saw this as a positive sign that it had never been in an accident. Unlike the majority of classic Impreza’s out there, both rear arches are solid and rot free. There is however the very slightest blemish showing on the drivers arch (please view pictures) There are also a couple of minor car park dents that are too small to photograph. Nothing detracts from the car appearance. There is none of the usual rotten sills, and areas around the front/ rear windscreen are unmarked on this example. She get’s comments everywhere she goes, an unmodified clean special edition Classic is a rarety these days! I have fitted a set of small black mudflats to prevent stone chipping/ dirt. They are mounted on original/ existing holes in the bumper. These could easily be removed if not to buyers taste. I have fitted all new RB5 decals around as the old ones had faded with the sun. I have fitted fresh number plates as the old ones had begun to ‘yellow’ I do still have both original front and rear Subaru dealer number plates. Another sign that she has been cared for. The RB5 is also fitted with genuine Subaru front headlight covers.
Interior.
The interior is unmarked and totally original. No wear evident to any seats/ carpets, I have used seat covers in my ownership. The RB5’s steering wheel and gear knob are in fine condition showing little signs of wear. The RB5 retains it’s original and rare ‘RB5’ over mats that came as part of the special edition package. They are again unmarked, they are no longer available from Subaru. The RB5 also has it’s original Subaru radio/ cassette head unit with under seat CD changer. There are no silly boost gauges/ pods screwed into the dashboard. All lovely and original. Rear seats look unused. All electrics work without fault. The original tool kit/ spare wheel and jack remain in the boot. The RB5 was fitted with a Thatcham approved Cat 1 Sigma alarm/ immobiliser from new, the alarm is in full working order with all documentation present. All owners manuals, handbooks and 2 x keys/ alarm fobs are present.
Wheels/ Tyres.
The wheels are the original 17’’ Prodrive Speedlines and have their original black ‘Prodrive’ centre caps. They have previously been refurbished in silver and, save for a few superficial marks are in very good condition. I have changed all four tyres for brand new Toyo Proxes T1r’s in the past 2000 miles so there is plenty of tread. McGuard locking wheel nuts.
Mechanicals.
As can be seen from the comprehensive service history, the RB5 has been very well cared for. The engine uses no oil or water. The anti freeze is a bright blue and engine oil golden yellow. There is no ‘piston slap’ (common on abused engines) on start up. As said, totally standard bar a stainless back box. There are no knocks/ bangs from the suspension, the standard fit Prodrive quick shift linkage provides a lovely positive gear shift.
