I know you can fit a Ph.2/3 tailgate on a Ph.1 car, but is it possible to switch the bootlid popper button over from the Ph.1 bootlid I remove to put it on the Ph.2 one?

Need a replacement bootlid and have a Ph.2 here but don't want to have the Ph.2 boot popper.

Right, the answer is yes, but there is a hole left in the tailgate from the top mount of the old ph.2 button.

Filler and a spray could cure this? I've done it before on a car that had its rub strips removed.

Yes that's what I was thinking, but it is already loads better, the huge lacquer peel is gone for a start, there was a bit of a dent too and upon close inspection the bottom edge of the window was bubbling wih rust which seems to happen to a lot of ph.1 tailgates but not the later ones.
Not to mention my ph.2 one has a genuine SP pack spoiler on it. Smile

I'll put a plate in and filler over it, just not sure whether to paint it myself or let a professional/someone who isn't clumsy as hell do it!

Also, for anyone reading this thread for information, a 3rd brake light from a later car plugs straight in to the existing Ph.1 loom, and swapping the boot popper and lock over is possible but extremely fiddly to get the catches on.

Wouldn't it be easier and neater to just use the later button instead of filling and painting the tailgate, having a nasty blow-in etc? Unless it is the wrong colour to begin with so it needs painting anyway.

It is the correct colour but I don't want a Ph.2 button on a Ph.1, and I want the same lock on the boot as on the front doors.

The old tailgate would have needed paint anyway as there was lacquer peel of epic proportions on it.

This is an old picture of my own car:

Just behind the seatbelt on the c-pillar there is some wiring if you look closely, there are three plugs there which are what the tailgate loom plugs into. I simply plugged the loom from the new tailgate in and it all just worked.

I imagine the tailgate looms are different but the main interior loom is the same to minimise complexity on the production line.
However, I was still a bit surprised as I hadn't realised that any Ph.1s came with a tailgate-mounted brake light.
