Hi all I have just brought an r reg gti6 it has 90k on clock and has a top end (hydraulic lifter) tap the car has been sat for about 3 years. It was my brothers car he had sold it to a guy to use as a track day car but he never got round to doing it. Anyway as I know this car and how fussy my brother is I brought it back knowing it was very clean under the mould and moss. I only paid £400 so was well worth it even tho it wouldn't start lol. A £20 crank sensor sorted that tho😄. Anyway I know this car did not tap when it was parked up but now does the only thing that has been done apart from not started for 3 years is a cam belt could the timing be slightly out or would I notice other things. Oh yeah and before anyone asks yes it has had a oil and filter change and I've driven so far 500miles with no issues apart from tap tap tap.

quite likely whoever did the belt ballsed it up and bent a valve.

tappets whilst may have been sticky certainly should have quietened down with fresh oil and 500 miles on them.

LOL

If its a bent valve tapper id just run it until it goes bang. It could last a day, could last 100k. For the price you paid you could then bung in another engine and still have a bargain.

What would it cost to just replace whole cylinder head? And if I can get hold of one is there any suggestions on anything to do to it before bolting it on?

no need to replace the whole head, just the damaged valves, sometimes they need a guide or two as well.

Is it best to get valves from Peugeot ? Would it not be cheaper to just replace whole thing?

Additives will not un-bend valves.

Why not buy a set of valves & guides etc. and then send your head off to have them installed?

Carl (mechanical repairs) on here used to do exchange heads, get in touch with him if you want to go down that route
