just after some advice.. im removing my head and I have a dreaded tapper Sad

have bought a uprated head gasket and bolt set off Rich W

my question is do I HAVE to get the head skimmed or is it just good practice to have it done..

car has NEVER over heated and has NOT blown the head gasket so I don't see why I should need to have it skimmed as it wont be warped.. soo unless I don't know something about these heads then I don't see why it must be skimmed

can people shed some light and there opinions on this..

thanks

no me and my mechanic friend are. hes done this before in garage with other cars but hes not done a gti6..

only asking as im trying to save money as im nearly 200 in parts alone already and I don't want to spend money on skimming when I don't see why its necessary if the heads not wrapped

and if things go tits up and we foul up.. I will buck up and use the plastic fantastic to pay for a proper rebuild

but as said I reckon we can do it, was just seeing what people opinions were on skimming

I've done a few heads by fully cleaning them up with wet and dry paper then checking for straightness with a straight edge and feeler gauges. But that was whe doing stuff under warrenty and you could clearly see the place where the gasket had developed a large hole lol.

I have a guy that skims heads for me for £30 if I'm 100% happy there were no cooling issues etc before it came off.

It's best practice to skim a head as even when undoing it from the block it can twist or warp a small amount.

It's a complete bodge not to skim an alloy head - particularly on engines that use an MLS gasket - as these create a mechanical seal by biting into the alloy head.

Get it skimmed! Do it once and do it right.

I can supply a re-conditioned head if need be.

the gasket doesn't bite into the head, but with an MLS item they do need a good surface prep, a fibre gasket is much more forgiving.

no need to waste £80 on a gasket, they are no better than £40 one from GSF or Peugeot.

with the age of the heads these days corrosion can be a big issue, the depth of skim depends how much is required to give the correct surface finish, however do bear in mind that 0.20 mm is the maximum amount you can take safely, and with a skim of that depth it is wise to use a repair gasket or 1.35 or 1.40mm rather than the 1.2mm standard item.

Doing it properly is to check :
flatness (using straight edge DIN 874/00 & feeler gauge) head and block,
surface smoothness ( Ra) by profilometer,
and sleeve protrusion

well some good news specially for the perfectionists out there I am getting the head skimmed..

one of my mates put me on the one of his friends who works in motor engineering shop and hes guna skim head for 35... supply and fit new valve guides for 10 each... and if I supply the new valves hell just grind seats and fit them for me. so Im looking between £60-100 for work which is a hell of a lot less than I thought it would be so im just guna bite the bullet and get me wallet out and get him to do all work.. and ill just remove and refit the head with all new gaskets.
