Hi guys, need some help! Car's been sat for a month whilst i've been working on it, went to start it today and it won't fire up. It turns over and the fuel pump primes, from what i've read on here it sounds like it could be the crank sensor? or could it be the ecu? Also, where is the crank sensor located?

Thanks.

crank sensor is bolted to top of the gearbox right where it meets the engine, black plug with a 10mm bolt holding it on. google images > "gti6 crank sensor"

have you physically checked for spark and fuel at the rail?

... behind the battery box. Could this be the culprit?

I changed the passenger side wheel bearing, p/s cv boot, replaced front brake lines, calipers, flexi hoses. I had the battery box detached so i could unplug the abs sensor, must have hit the relay whilst the box was detached! Doh

If the pump is priming then it's working but worth changing I guess ? It's got fuel in the car I assume ?

Yeah it's got fuel in, the light's come on though. Will put more fuel in and change the relay and see if that helps.

Thanks

Try the fuel cut-off switch. It's a big red button by the top suspension mount on the battery box side.

Make sure you haven't bumped it and it needs resetting. If it does, just press it to reset it. Yes

Looking at the crack in the double function relay I would say if the red button is ok that will be your culprit.

I tried the cut off switch which didn't resolve the issue, if it is the relay would the engine management light not light up on the second ignition turn?

The relay does two functions, it supplies the fuel circuit and also the ignition circuit, I change a lot of these when they have been damaged like your have the contacts inside corrode, open it up and hold the contacts together, that will give you a definite answer.

pull the casing off it and check it for water damage but that's a common issue as well
