get your wallet out, hand over cash, walk away with empty wallet and box of tappets.

in most cases they can be revived by stripping down cleaning and re-dressing the top surface.

Thats what I was getting at. I have a dodgy tappet and quietens down after a few minutes.

Compression test won't show up a bent valve, when they tap they still seal correctly just tap as they hit the valve seat and eventually the valve falls in half and ruins the engine. Some last months others years. If it sounds the same hot and cold you've got a bent valve.

If it comes and goes loud and quiet depending on oil temperature among other things then it's probably a tappet.

I've heard about pattern ones being utter s**te so if it's tappets buy genuine once and save yourself the hassle.

Or just turn up the stereo Whistle

The sound is much the same whether its hot or cold, mite be cheaper to source a good cylinder head, if theres one to be had

Don't waste your money on tappets - they will NOT solve the issue...

Just done a 1400 mile round trip to Scotland with one intermittently noisy lifter, got so loud on occasions it was embarassing. It mostly seemed to happen above 3000 RPM for long periods, then next day quiet again.
