Hey, just a general question. For a turbo'd '6 what size oil cooler do you all think it will need? Lets say running around 400-450bhp. Mainly road and show use but the occassional satapod run and open track day.

I understand people are using 19 row coolers for their supercharged cars but the added heat from the turbo is making me think i need bigger. Maybe a 25row. The turbo in question is watercooled aswell.

what do you all think?

I would imagine a 19 row should be sufficient. Focus on the size of the intercooler Thumbs up

Far too many factors to say for sure. A well positioned 10 row may well be sufficient for a road car.

Nah, you'd want bigger than a 10row on a tracked 6!
Turbo charged or not, it's a road car so it's only realistically gonna get short bursts of 'hammer'. A mates (standard engined) 270bhp turbo'd 6 road car has no oil cooler, it's been fine so far with fast road use.

I only have 13 row on my track car and never gets above 100 degree.

Location and pipework is key.

Too big an oil cooler, you wont get your oil up to normal running temp when driving normally. Type of oil is also key Thumbs up

Personally I'd say go for at least a 19row cooler and cut the bumper or fit ducting to give good airflow through it.Also use a thermostatic plate then oil will get up to temp before it's allowed to reach the cooler? that's what I'm putting on my ShB supercharged car and the Turbo in you're car will heat the oil significantly more and raise under bonnet temps massively? Just my 50ps worth sounds like an awesome project any list of specs? pics?

To add to this, it's better to have a big, well-ducted oil cooler that might cool too much in winter or under some situations which can then be partially blanked if necessary.

Same as Pete, I have a 13row setup behind the front fog light getting direct airflow on a thermostatic takeoff plate. Sits at 80 degrees all day long when driving normally, never went past 100 when going up Prescott hill climb in 30degree heat last year.

Would say 19 row should be adequate if you have good airflow in and out of it.

I run a 19-row cooler, I found a 13-row wasn't sufficient enough.

Mine sits behind the o/s foglight hole, and the oil sits at 80 all the time, never over 100 on track after 45 minutes, so I'd say it works well.

Running too cold in the winter shouldn't be an issue if you have a thermostat in the sandwich plate as the oil won't be allowed to flow to the cooler until it reaches 80c anyway.

Yes the plans for a thermostatic sandwich plate. Thanks for all the replies. As far as the project/car goes I will put it in the project section in a month or two. Gt3071r with a custom made manifold. Plan is forged engine the same as a supercharged 6. Maybe gas flowed. With suspension and brake upgrades of course.

Dont think anyone has mentioned pipe size!

Not sure on the 4 cylinders but on my v6 it was suggested the pipe work be 5/8 bzp as will give better flow then the smaller 1/2 bzp

Think anything then a standard gti ie supercharged etc should have the larger dia pipework

Makes sence with the pipe but i don't know what effect on the oil pressure it would have? I've only ever seen 1/2 bsp sandwich plates for a '6
