thought id do a little update on my electric "motor" bike.

i tried to put 24v through the motor today. in preparation i...

1. drilled about 10 holes in the motor casing to cool it better as it had none before.

2. lowered the final gear from a 14t to a 16t to lower motor stress.

to my dismay i once again sheared the main big gear in the wormdrive box off of its shaft. bloody thing is only glued on in the first place with no splines or anything : S regluing it with gorilla glue the first time this happened held it well...... up untill 24v : (

after dismantling said gearbox i have re-glued and also drilled and tapped two screws locking this gear onto the shaft.

this is all due to not having a progressive throttle. the initial shock forces must ripping it free.

i wont be trying 24v again untill i have my speed controller and twist throttle to limit the power delivery

once again another update.

i got myself 2 brand new 20ah batteries and a 36v 500w controller today. i lowered the final gear to 21teeth once again to lower motor(more so the gearbox) strain. i got my friend to follow me in his car and i got to a grand total of 32mph. battery was still showing a full 5 bars on the readout after 15 minutes of playing around.

the motor also felt a lot colder than when i ran it on a 24v 500w controller of the same make/brand. which i thought was weird. (thougth/comments on this matter?)

then i let my friend have a go and he managed to once again strip the teeth of the plastic gearbox gear
>Sad
so as i mentioned in another post i definately need a metal gear cut. which is next on my agenda.

i have finally reached that point in the project when im seeing the top of the hill and how im going to get there. 30mph+ with decent acceleration for what seemingly could be an hour or more is exactly what i wanted. it makes the bike feel usable and not a liability on the road.

comparing this to what you can buy instead of building i think ive done rather well, especially on the cash front.

bike - free (given to me at work)
motor - £10
batteries - £70 2 new at 30 a pop and one i got froma junk shop for a tenner
controller - £10
sprockets - £15 i got a set of 9 11 and 13t
twist throttle - £15
battery holders x 4 - £20 i got 4 used trolleys with holders/motors etc on ebay all for 20
cable - free ,any high amp flexible cable will do really)

so far £140 + plus whatever this new gear is to cut and im still well under anything else you can buy
