Evening all, I've tried searching on here but couldn't find anything that helped. My 6 has just developed a few weird problems, I'm a noob when it comes to cars so any help would be muchly appreciated!

Okay here it goes....

This morning i noticed an oily patch on the drive under my car (drivers side), i had a quick look in the engine bay and noticed my power steering fluid was below the minimum. Couldn't really see any leaks tho ( my PAS cooling is weeping a bit which i discovered last week) Anyway, on my way home from Tesco this evening my gear stick started to feel notchy and was squeaking between gear changes, also felt a bit rattly although there's no rattling noises. When i got home and car was idling, the revs were a little higher than usual and when i turned my steering wheel the revs went up and down below normal.... almost stalled. Sad

Just wondering if these problems are related? or if i have a few separate problems?

Thanks.

I think the first port of call would be to whip the ICV (idle control valve) out and give it a clean and see if that improves it at all. If it does, you'll probably need a new one as it's only a short term fix.

Yep, agree with Woody.

The ICV sounds like it needs cleaning, there's an FAQ on here for that.

As for the gearbox being notchy and 'squeaking' between gear changes, sounds like your gear linkages are getting past their best.

The oily patch and low PAS fluid is probably the PAS ram (situated on the steering rack) spring a leak, this is a common occurrence. However, if it is that, you'll have to source one second hand or from a factors as Pug no longer sell these. Sad

I've got a vts rack waiting to go on Smile ... when i can afford it! Was wondering.... my steering column has play in it, when i turn my steering wheel i get a whirring noise, is that the column or the could it be the PAS pump? or is just because of the low fluid levels? Dunno Sorry for all the questions!... Car drives really badly at the moment. Sad

Thanks

The whirring when turning will be the pump, and it's caused by the low fluid level. Yes

Get it sorted fast as the fluid lubricates the pump also - with too little fluid the pump's bearings will soon become knackered and then you'll need a new pump.
