Hi guys,

Just bought a 306 Rallye recently which has started costing me £££ straight away! Sad After just doing the starter motor and radiator I noticed a couple of days ago a knocking/tapping from the nearside front when on full right hand lock.

I've had outer CVs go before and the noise I've started getting wasn't like the regular click click click I've had before, it was more like a random clattering, like something was loose near the wheel and was hitting against it.

Drove to Southampton tonight with the G/f to do some xmas shopping, (13 miles away) and on the way back the noise started becoming a bit more prominent when turning right, then when I was on the motorway started getting a pulling/pulsing vibration through the wheel, had to slow down to 40 then 20 to crawl it home without the steering wheel trying to shake my hands off!

Would you say wheel bearing? I've had a quick wiggle of the driveshafts, the nearside inner CV has a bit of play in it but it is not massive, the outer has no play and the offside shaft doesn't appear to have any play.

Jack it up mate and wiggle the wheel to check play in wheel bearing. though to be fair though when this happened to mine it was the diff bearings that had failed?

Could be a broken spring for the noise when turning, also inner CV joint could cause your vibration.

I plan to jack it up and have a check on the wheel bearing tonight, guess this is the primary suspect just surprised that it's made no rumbling or grinding type noises.

How would you check the diff bearings?

Turns out to be the driveshaft after all. The clip holding the gaiter onto the shaft had come loose and the outer joint was dry, close to seizing up. It must have thrown its grease a while ago as it was fairly clean round there which is why I didn't suspect the shaft to begin with. Least I've found it!
