Hi guys,

Have been loving my GTi6. Clutch was starting to slip so took it in for a new one.

Received it back a week or so later. New clutch felt great. Drove about 600kms before all of a sudden, no clutch. Just a loose pedal.

Took it back, the clutch they put in was faulty and had disintegrated. No worries, replaced under warranty.

Driving away from the garage this time, the car was graunching while going into 3rd and 5th gear. Thinking it was just the new clutch wearing in, I continued home. Next day it was still doing it, so took it back.

They call back, saying they had put the wrong gearbox oil in when they did the first clutch. They will drain and replace with the correct oil and see if it fixes the problem.

It didnt. They are now telling me the synchro is screwed and are currently taking gearbox apart to see what needs replacing. He says it had nothing to do with them and must be just a coincidence that it happened while in their care.

Now I'm no mechanic, but this seems unreasonable to me. It seems clear that the faulty clutch disintigrating while I was mid gear change must have done something, made worse by having the incorrect gearbox oil.

However not knowing how these things work, I cant exactly argue with them.

So what do you guys think? Should I just suck it up and pay for a new gearbox, or have I got good reason to fight these guys?

Don't let them try & fix the box, just buy a replacement from here, get them to fit it & drive away
Tbh probably clutch not adjusted correctly causing the crunching or they hadn't put any oil in....
Cool

Wayne - Buying one from here might be difficult - he lives in New Zealand.

More than likely they forgot to put any oil in the box as it's easily done to be honest I your doing a big job and keen to finish it. The wrong grade of oil wouldn't damage it in such a short space of time. The cable is self adjusting and even if the adjuster is stuck I've never had one that wouldn't go into gear because of it really.

Damage is done you can argue there were no gearbox problems at all until they touched it, maybe they f**ked it maybe it's a coincidence you will never be able to prove either way.

Easiest thing to do is source a box but if your in New Zealand that could prove difficult :/.

I'd get the box and take it to a specialist gearbox re-conditioner for their opinion. A new syncro will be cheaper than buying a box, but if it has run without oil it'll be pretty knackered!
