I have searched a fair bit in this forum, and other places on the web. I can find quite a few threads with people having variations on the same problem, but not a single definitive answer!

My car has been sitting for a quite a while, the battery is completely dead.

Bought a new battery, hooked it up. Dash lights come on, everything works inside the car, but when the battery is connected, the hazards flash (more quickly than usual) for about 30 seconds, then stop. Seems OK...

But when I turn the key to start the car, there's just a click, all the dash lights turn off, and the car seemingly goes dead. Turn the key to off and back on, nothing happens. After about 30 seconds the dash lights, etc. will come on, and I'm back to square one!

Any help much appreciated!

Is the new battery charged, sounds like a dead battery to me.

Does indeed sound like the battery needs charging or replacing.

Just because a battery may be charged, can it take a 'load' on it? If not, the battery will need replacing. Yes

It's a brand new battery, been sat on a trickle charger for a week while I've been away too, definitely works. I'm pretty sure I tried to jump start it at one point in the past and the same thing happened then.

Lights flashing wildly sounds like alarm related?

That's what I thought, definitely not just the hazards coming on, if i turn them on, the flashing slows down!

When the hazards are flashing try locking then unlocking the car with the remote. It might just be the alarm going off. Had the same thing after I changed the battery.

Try this:

When you turn the ignition on and the hazards flash really fast, press and hold down the button on the right hand side of the steering column until the hazards stop flashing.

This should turn the alarm/immobiliser system off. Then try starting the car. Yes

A good call, you could try giving the starter a light tap with a hammer and see if makes a difference. If the car has been sat for a while it's very possible. Yes

How good are your battery connections. Doesn't matter how good your battery is. If your connectors an main feeds are loose or corroded you won't start the car. Remember the dash only draws small amps compared to the starter kicking.

Managed to get the car started earlier and went for a quick spin round the block... turned out to be a combination of pretty much everything mentioned in this thread! Re-charged the battery, locked and unlocked the car properly - hazards stopped flashing. Hooked up to jump cables but it was still clicking when I tried to start it - positive battery connection was broken after I unscrewed the red thing! Electric taped it on and after a few minutes charging it started turning over, not much happened but after a bit I remembered the red button! 2 minutes later it was alive! Very happy... thanks everyone (watch out for the 1000 other problem threads I'll post now it's up and running!)
