So, the story is this:

Heater matrix failed a few weeks ago. Have bypassed it completely as a temporary fix, as I want to get the car through mot before starting to take the dash out. I reckon it failed due to too much water and not enough coolant in the system frankly. Panicked water fill on an event after a burst pipe, then only topped up with coolant at home rather than replaced. My own silly fault.

Anyway. Put everything back together, bleed the system, now when I take it for a drive, the temp continues climbing into the red and the overflow pipe is spewing out water + radiator is pretty much stone cold. Full of coolant, bleed, fans kicking in correctly. My current theory is that the pump has fubared as well. I'm hearing a sweak at tickover around the belts area as well, which I'm thinking might be the pump.

Anyone else any opinions? Seen a lot on here about the thermostat causing similar issues? Would prefer to be changing it!

Could be something simple as the rad cap has failed I had a similar problem with mine id start with that first as its the cheapest option.

Doubt the pump has failed - sounds like head gasket failure as presurising the system ?

Yeah, I'm coming to than conclusion today after looking at it. There's a lovely wee stream of air bubbles coming up and out the header tank on tick over.

Rad shouldn't be stone cold though regardless of wether the headgasket has failed.

If your confident It's bled well then next thing I'd look at is thermostat

It probably not bled correctly at the thermostat as an air lock will stop the coolent goimg round. Or the thermostat itself is fooked. But does sound ultimately like the head gaskets trashed.

It sounds like the thermostat is getting stuck shut, which in turn has now damaged the HG.
