Hi all, my first post on here so be nice! I purchased a 306 GTi6 over the weekend, however from reading the service history it seems the cambelt was last done in 2006 (and only then it was because, sadly, it snapped. It seems it had some head work done as part of this). Therefore I'm not taking any chances, and want to fit a new belt, tensioners, water pump, aux belt and pulley sooner than later.

I've been on CarParts4Less and searched for a replacement belt kit, however I now have a problem - there's a selection of 2 belts.

Belt 1

Belt 2

My car was registered new on June 1 2000 (Belts above are for pre and post April 2000). After a quick search on here I found the handy build date calculator (or rather, where it should have been - it seems long gone sadly). If anyone could help me with which kit I need that would be appreciated (I already have a fitter).

I don think it matters which kit you buy, there are slightly different tensioners between the two kits.

If your buying kit it will have the correct tensioner.

I think most people on here use the 136 tooth kit as it it has a more sturdy tensioner or some thing.

Could be wrong though

It's a hard one to judge. Yes

"Belt 1" above is the later variety, "Belt 2" is the earlier (and much more highly regarded type).

The safest method would be to whip the cambelt off and have a look first as with the age of your car, it *could* be either one. If I was to guess I'd say you possibly had the earlier one as another car of the same age as yours I know did. However, it really is 50/50 and you will need to take a quick look to be sure. Yes

Stan.

You can't just rely on buying a "kit" to have the correct parts, they are not interchangeable. No

You have to add a special "screw column" to a 137 tooth kitted engine if you wish to change to a 136.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Stan - thanks for that. I'll contact my local Peugeot dealer to find out which one I need before whipping the belt off to find I need the other type (I'd like to think they will know!)

bigbadbowen - I have family and friends in the motor trade who will fit the parts. Water pump was always being done at the same time, along with the pulley. Stupid not to really!

Peugeot will not know at all (You cannot expect them to really as it could have been upgraded), mind there belt kits are well priced.

I've never had any issues with the later type of belt, yes the tensioners are plastic but so are the new older style ones in some kits

Thanks again for all the replies chaps Smile

Miles - that's a valid point. It's possible it was upgraded considering it was a snapper back in 2006 (It had done just over 40k then, and it's only on 68 now), but I'm not taking any chances! I'll whip the cover off and see if there's a part number on the belt itself that I can cross-check (Why I didn't think of that last night I'll never know!).

It should be stated on the belt whether it's 136 or 137 tooth.

If you can't see it on the belt, then just look at the tensioner. If the tensioner is black and plastic then it's a 137 kit, if it's shiny silver and metal then you have the 136 kit. Yes

Stan.

Not a problem, if you do find you have the 137 kit, I can give you the two part numbers you will need to buy from Peugeot to convert it to fit the 136 kit which is the better one to have in my opinion. Thumbs up

Just a quick update - the current belt is an Isoran 136RP unit - I therefore assume this is a 136.

Thanks again for all the help. I'll get a project thread up soon so you can share the Manstone love!
