Hi Guys,
Ive bought a car for spares or repairs to break for parts. Its been owned by a friend of a friend for a long time and i know its been well looked after but unfortunately the belt snapped on idle.
I was after a new engine to build for my SC project so i was considering using this one and putting a new head on but ive heard rumours that the bottom ends seem to go after some time on a snapper? I will be fitting new shells and a recon'd head amongst other things so have i got any reason to worry about it giving way or should it be ok?

If you fit bearings you will be fine, the failures occur due to running contaminated oil when the hg has been going.

Right so im planning new piston rings, honed bores, big end bearings, rebuilt head and skimmed. Should be fine in terms of its previous history right?

depends on bore wear.

Yeah that i can check out when i take it apart and go from there but its fairly low mileage.
Biggest worry is piston or bore damage from the belt snap but it was only at 1000-1500rpm so i cant imagine there will be masses of damage? if im honest, ive never had the head off of one of these engines after a belt snap before.

You won't know for sure until you take it apart and inspect it. Yes

unless your bores were worn prior to belt snapping then they will be ok a slight indentation on the pistons where the valves hit is nothing to worry about, good thing is it happened at low revs bad news is you WILL have bent valves, guides can shatter but i can't see it in your case. As said above, strip it down and carefully inspect for damage. If you can do the work yourself it won't be a costly job to repair
