Other people have overcome this by attaching a bike brake lever to the cable which admittedly looks cool and does do the job but can't be used if the car isn't stripped really and have seen people saying the levers work loose under the vibration from the engine. So decided to have a go at doing it another way in my lunch break yesterday.
Firstly I pulled off the gear nob and unclipped the cable. slid up the outer part of the reverse cable mechanism and chopped approx the top 2" from the lever.
Then you'll notice that the inner part of the reverse cable mechanism is what is used to clip the outer sheath of the cable to the lever and hold it in place so the cable can be pulled. This inner plastic part has been pressed onto a knurled section on the lever and is bloody tight on there!
I tried tapping it downwards with a hammer and punch and it wouldn't move. In the end I resorted to cutting straight down one side of it to free it from the lever.
Once you have cut this off however it then spreads itself out so the outer part of the reverse slider no longer slides over it properly. I elected to cut the top half of the inner part of the slider off and just keep the bottom.
Where I cut it there is enough room above the little clip that holds the reverse cable to get a jubilee clip round there which you'll need later. I then fitted this inner part with the jubilee round approx 2" lower than it was to begin with and tightened up the jubilee. Then you should have something that looks like this....
The outer part of the slider then just simply slides up and down on the metal shaft of the lever itself not on the plastic inner part anymore. Slide it over the lever as before, clip in the reverse cable to your newly fitted holder and your nearly there .
The next problem is that the gear nob is made with an X moulded into the base of it which is now not big enough to fit the end of the lever you just hacked 2" off.
I just drilled it out using a 10mm drill bit and it was still a very tight fit to get on but wasn't gonna go anywhere afterwards in a hurry.
Once on and finished give It a touch of black spray paint to tidy it up and it will look something like this
Or just refit the leather gaiter before putting on the gear nob if not in a stripped car. Job done
Ideally then add a lovely set of Miles pug racing gear linkages and a GE quickshift (not fitted to low down) and you'll be left with a nice tight short throw that isn't stupidly notchy and ruins your synros in 5 minutes.
Hope this is useful to others .
