Hi, I'm back in a 6 after a few year break. Can't seem to log on with my old user name so started another.

Looking like my HG has gone ( oh the joys of owning a 6!! ) please could anyone advise on what parts I'm gonna need to do this. Cambelt will obviously getting done too as well as getting head skimmed Also is it a case of using all genuine parts??

Thanks

get to euro car parts/GSF

you'll need

Head gasket set,.. this should contain most things needed I believe
can't remember if you have to buy stretch bolts separately?
if you're skimming the head
you'll need to remove the valves so you'll need new valve stem seals

Cambelt kit,.. 136 tooth i think is the best? Dunno

you planning on doing this you're self or getting it done for you?

the likes of GSF/Euro car parts most of the time use the same quality of stock sometimes the same stock at a fraction of the cost! just buy the best quality items they do and you won't go far wrong!

if you buy the cambelt "kit" everything you need will be in there! Wink there's the 137 tooth and 136 tooth,..
i'm sure the 136tooth is the upgrade version with plastic tensioner pulley but can't quite remember.

The 136 kit has a metal tensioner, it's the older style but generally regarded as the better one to have. Yes

linky no worky, I use GSF for the gasket and belt kit, though many pug dealers will do the parts for the same prices on trade deals.

The part dept guy at my local dealer is a knob and I bet (in fact I know) he wouldn't do it at trade.

Will have a look on gsf now

Pug head gaskets are only £40 plus vat ish and are much better quality.

I know what miles means about the tags, had that before fitting pattern s**t ones. Then cut said tags off lol. I'd say buy a genuine water pump as well to be safe as they are the reason for a lot of belt failures but the one on my 6 has covered approx 7k miles in 2 years and has recently developed a leak..... p**sed me right off!

idler is in the same place, but the later belt is longer by one tooth and uses a sprung instead of a fixed tensioner, the earlier fixed type is preferred.

If you mean changing the kit from say a 137 tooth kit to a 136 tooth kit then no, you will need other parts.

However, if you are changing the parts for identical then yes, everything you need bar a water pump is included in the timing belt kit. Yes

As for oil, stick with 10w40 unless the engine is modified in any way.

Either will be fine, however try to get head bolts which need a 'female' torx socket to operate them as opposed to a 'male' torx bit. The ones which require the socket are the same setup as OE and much better for torquing in my opinion. Also, when it comes to removing them they don't round off as easily.

It's in bits now. Has a fixed tensioner only difference I can see compared to my mates is that the idler is plastic on mine ? I know theirs has had a new belt in the past . Would I be correct in assuming the new kit would have a bearing as opposed to the as said plastic ? Thanks

Ps their kit was from Dealer

The idler being plastic is a fairly new idea, kits from dealers have only just started coming out with these a few months back. Yes

Nothing to worry about. Smile

Have had the head skimmed. Apparently it needed a fair bit off due to warp! On assembly turned it over by hand and its looking like contact is being made between valves n pistons!! What's the max material that can be taken off?
