At the time I searched high and low for a standard, unmolested car and eventually I came across this for sale with 92000 miles on the clock at Sportshatch Specialists near Reading. That was two and a half years ago and having just purchased a new toy/daily driver the Gti-6 must go.
I hope that I will be able to sell it to another enthusiast like myself who will be able to keep it in top condition and enjoy using it, as I have.
Exterior:
The black paintwork isn’t perfect, with a few small dings and stonechips, but it really does look stunning once cleaned and polished. The pictures don’t do it justice but if you see it in person I think you will agree, especially considering the car’s age and that the paintwork is original.
The Cyclones have recently been refurbished and look fantastic! The tyres have between 3.5mm and 5mm tread depth remaining. The front tyres are Avon ZV5’s and the rears Pirelli P6000’s.
Interior:
The interior is standard from the original Phase 2 seats with the larger bolsters and cloth centres to the black centre console fascia panels and the standard Clarion radio/cassette headunit. There is a Clarion 6 disc CD changer in the boot. The driver’s side bolster is in remarkably good condition with some wear but no tears or splits. If the buyer wants I do have a complete set of silver dash fascia panels and vents, including dash surround.
The air conditioning does not work and I have not bothered to spend any time or money on it as I know the weaknesses of the 306 a/c system.
All electrics work as they should.
Engine & gearbox:
The engine pulls strongly and returns very good fuel economy. During my ownership I have averaged 33mpg with a mixture of gentle and spirited driving. I have changed the engine oil every 6000 miles using Mobil Super 2000 10w40 semi-synthetic. In between services the engine doesn’t use any oil or water.
Having recently had a clutch replacement carried out by Carl Chambers the gearbox is nice and tight. Carl also did the timing belt and water pump at the same time so there is no need to worry about this. This was done at 117200 miles in May 2013.
I have fitted chocks to the top engine mount and the cradle itself is original and free from cracks. At 109300 miles I replaced the top and NS engine mounts themselves.
The coolant was flushed and serviced including thermostat and green temperature sensor at 114300 miles 6 months ago and the car runs nicely at 80degC once warmed up.
Suspension and brakes:
Advisories on the last MOT were for a slightly deteriorated rear brake hose and a deteriorated CV gaiter. These have not caused any issues in the last year and gaiter is not allowing grease to escape or the ingress of dirt.
During my ownership I have replaced the front and rear discs with standard Brembo parts and the pads all round with standard Mintex pads. They still feel and look, especially at the front, as though they have just been changed. The Lancia Delta pads help with this as they don’t leave a nasty lip on the OD.
At 102600 miles I replaced the rear subframe mounting bushes with Lemforder parts and the rear has felt nice since then. Both track rod ends and the droplinks have also been changed during the last two and a half years.
Exhaust:
This is standard throughout including the nice chrome tip on the backbox. I replaced the cat at 97700 miles in Aug 2011 and the centre section was also replaced at 108000 miles just over a year ago.
Service History:
The car has had 4 previous owners prior to myself. The service booklet shows main dealer stamped service history at regular intervals up to 86000 miles in October 2008. There is a massive folder of receipts for parts bought and work done from then onwards. I have 2 keys for the car, the owner's handbook and even the original locking wheel bolt kit with two keys and spare wheel bolts.
If anyone wants a more detailed summary of the major work I can provide it.
My asking price is £1550 for the car as it currently stands with 3 months MOT and 5 months tax remaining.
I have tried to be as honest as possible and I know that my asking price is high. All I would say is, come and have a look at the car and take it for a spin then you will be in a better position to tell me what you think it is worth.
Finally, the car is located in Erdington, which is North Birmingham just off M6 JCN 5 or 6.
Thanks for looking!
