Right when I am on full lock either left or right and sometimes half lock the car makes a loud clonking noise, not sure what diff is fitted but def a plate diff.

I used to have a kaaz plate diff fitted in my turbo but it never made noises this badly, just wondering what it could be, Stilly fitted gearbox and ground out the metal work to make sure the diff fitted which it does. The car does not make the noise when driving straight and also does not pull left or right when the hand is off the steering wheel.

Any thoughts?

I assume your moving when this happens dude ?

How old is the diff ? Any idea on ramp angles ?

May just not like being on full lock ?

I'm in the noise box to, mine makes a rumbling. Sound when turning left or right or braking, hate it when these cars makes noises but I'm sure you will find cure the lads are good on here,

Yes mate, normally when pulling away from a junction is the worst. Diff is not old, barely 600 miles old, was bought from miles. No idea on angles, also running group a engine mounts all round so every vibration comes through the car.

They do make noises when cornering and braking / on / off the loud pedal as that's when the plates are trying to do their job ?

But I'm no expert so it could well be worn and need refurbing ? They don't last for ever and not really designed for road use either ?

But def should be ok after 600 miles very little use, not seen a track or drag strip yet

Sounds like the diff locking in to me ? Your using correct diff oil I assume ?

Plate diffs not really designed for the road so prob make all kinds of wired noises when cornering and on/off the power for general driving ?

Bare in mind it's trying to lock the power in and stop wheels braking traction especially when cornering ? Yes

Depends bud ? Who installed it ?

There is all sorts of pre loads etc ? It's a bit of a complex area that I have been trying to get my head round. Dunno

Mine started when I replaced the tie rod end, it's more like when a stomach rumbles, that sorta sound the car did drop on jack so gonna go under it Sunday and check if all is ok or if it suffered and damage to anything to occur that sound

The heavier the pre-load and the more aggressive the ramps the more it will clunk, even setup lightweight they clunk a bit with lock on at low speeds. They're not refined, they're just a clutch pack locking the wheels together. The clunk may not be the actual plates themselves, it could be a worn suspension component or the wheel 'skipping'. For starters I'd ask who ever fitted it what it's set to or pull it out and have a look.
What oil are you using? How does it drive, how quick does it lock up?

Plate diffs are fine on the road, alot of old skool road cars were fitted with them from the factory.

It was stilly's rallye from here, I have bought the car. Not sure what preloads he has set into it, if any. Only just changed a gearbox for another one, not sure what oil he use so will ask him tomorrow. Drives perfectly apart from this noise.

It should of bedded in after 600miles, I'd change the oil if you haven't already. I'd also ignore any fancy diff oils and use 75w80 semi.

Plate diffs are incredibly simple and fairly agricultural in all honesty. take it to bits and you'll figure it out very quickly, very easy to alter the preload by reconfiguring the plates and most diffs only have one set of ramp angles anyway.

It probably won't much, it's something you have to get used to.its never bothered me as the benefits far outweigh a bit of clunking Wink

Could be something else making the noise ? Defo check top engine mount housing isn't broken ?

the box is running pug box oil....the top engine mount has been sorted as it had a couple of cracks and now has been welded up.....

My 205 also clunks with the diff on steering.

Use the right oil and it won't clunk. Kazz oil is a good one to use. We have a gripper and tranx and I've just sold my zf

Never had any clunking even in full lock in car parks

Silkolene SILKTRAN SYN 5 75W-90 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil.

Would this be ok to use?
