My gti6 has decided to being annoying, even though much care is given!!

I just did an oil and filter change. Used full synthetic oil as usual. Engine suddenly started tapping on idle, but doesn't get louder under load. Also noticed my oil temp is a few degrees higher than normal. Performance is the same!

Far out! What is going on?

Yeah driven it for a good hour.

Oil is 10W-40 full synthetic, never had a problem with it.

Check spark plugs. Probably the one closest to the cambelt.

Pressure in the head can lead to it coming loose over time if its not properly torqued up - is my guess LOL

Thats right which is why it is always best to torque them up instead of doing them up till washer crushes or half a turn crap.

You sure its the engine and not the cat or heatshields?

Was definitely the engine. The cat is good and the heatshields are very secure. I checked the plugs they are all good! Strangely the tapping has stopped, turned the car on this morning and it sounds healthy again!! Is this normal haha?? Anything else I should be checking for?

I have noisy tappet. It taps for a bit and goes away, or sometimes it just dont tap at all. If has a tap though, its only on start up and always dissappears in a minute. Smile

Are you sure it isn't just because the new oil hadn't had a chance to circulate?

I've noticed that if you start one of these after it has been sitting for a while it is slightly noisy for a few seconds before the oil really gets everywhere.

Was tapping after at least an hour of driving.

Did it tap after you checked the plugs. It's hardly any movement that can make it happen - under a quarter turn. Worth cleaning down the threads anyway. Could also be a tappet but its pretty rare on these.

Happens due to the heat cycles on the engine, usually when its got bloody hot or bloody cold. Other cars do it when cracks appear in the head - see Volvo early me7 s**tboxes.

Noisy tappers are rare on 6 engines but they do happen. My old Diablo one had never had belt failure or head removed (you could see how rusty the head gasket was poking through the sides lol) and some days it would be quite noisy and sous almost as loud as a tapper and others be pretty quiet. And these engines are meant for 10/40 or 5/40 in cold climate according to the owners manual so shouldn't be a problem.

I had a tapping noise on my ex-206 RC (GTI180) back in 2008. Cause was a loose spark plug. Damn it freaked me out back then but was sorted easily Big grin

Sound was somewhere around failing tappet and a failed big end bearing.. It was louder than a tappet would do and it didn't change if the engine was cold or hot, but not as loud as a big end bearing would do..
