Is there one usual size for the main bearings if the crank hasn't been ground and is in good condition ?

Or is there any measurements available for the crank journals to confirm what size main bearings to use ?

Getting 59.90mm / 59.91mm on the main journals and 49.91mm / 49.92mm Big end journals.

Cheers

there is a colour code for the main bearings, where you use the relevant bottom bearing size according to clearance required, top mains are all the same thickness, all std rod bearings are the same.

you would find paint marks on the mains caps IIRC.

Ok cheers will look for a paint mark didnt notice any when i was at it earlier i'll take a closer look.

Was looking on service box and theres 6 diffrent sizes listed by colour for the mains.
The haynes refers to a code on the block that tells you what mains to use but the is no code on the block where it should be i'm guessing it was a sticker that has perished and fallen off.

So what your saying is there could/should be a diffent size lower main bearing to compensate for each journal diameter ?

yeah, IIRC the barcode is behind the lower engine mounting bracket.

the VIN MAY narrow it down, I dont know if servicebox will have info that detailed.

if your in any doubt then i would consider getting the crank ground then fit oversize set of shells at least that way you are guaranteed perfectly true journals

Yeah thats an option. The spare crank I've got looks to be in good condition came out of a working 6 so it would be a waste of money grinding it down if its in spec, was hoping someone had a true measurement for the journals.

When people say under size could be -0.3 -0.5 oversized but oversized from what original bearing size as pug list 6 sizes and it looks like your supposed to mix and match bottom shells to compensate for tolerances as welsh says.

Or am i thinking to deep into it and just need get a set of "standard" Acl bearings off Rich/Miles :donno

I believe I have the ACL's in mine, as Rich built the current engine and the crank was only polished not ground as it did not need it. Smile

The mains and big-ends are all the same size on the RFS.

What were you using to measure the crankshaft journals?

Will be going with the Acl's then seem like a win win on price and quality.
Just out of interest if i was going to get a polish done on the journals just to be sure, whats a fair price and does anyone know someone decent in medway/maidsone/ashford ?

I used to use Dartford Rebore for engine work when I lived in Kent. Yes

They seemed ok and not too pricey.
