Whine coming from inside the bay, not uber loud but emitting enough noise to be noticed.

Sounds fairly like a cooper S driving about.

At first I thought gearbox or driveshaft, but there is no vibration, at least no more than usual, and its linked to the engine speed, so it does this in neutral too.

I was guessing maybe the alternator is on its last legs?

Anyone slightly more mechanically minded like to hazzard a guess?

Cheers Thumbs up

Remove the auxillary belt and see if the noise goes away. This way you will be able to eliminate a lot of things. Yes

Good plan, anything to warn me about before I potentially go and break stuff?

you need a 3/8's ratchet to relieve tensioner, remove belt, temporarily run engine,ie don't go driving the car you'll have no power steering or alternator. whilst belt is off spin each pulley and check for roughness or noise
