Hi guys remember a discussion saying phase one gearboxes have a slightly longer final drive / ratio. Can somebody confirm this for me? Just want to have a box rebuild strengthened and would like the longest ratios possible.
Thanks Thumbs up

Yep its true. Can't remember the difference but remember my car wouldn't move when I mixed a crown wheel and pinion up because the teeth locked!

Think it was changed for phase 2 onwards as they lowered the rev limit as well possibly.

but yeah they are slightly different

In that case any gearbox you manage to get hold of that has BE4 stamped on the casing will not have the longer ratio as it was only the earlier BE3's found in Phase 1's which had this.

You may be able to find a difference if you look on Servicebox and use the VIN from a known Phase 1 and a Phase 3 and then see if the part numbers change. Yes

If you look on servicebox it shows you the 2 options and the ratios.

Out of interest, why do want the ratios to be as long as possible? I have a Super High Boost and the standard ratios (Phase 3) still do not allow me to top out 6th gear on any racetrack I've visited, so what is the benefit that you are looking at for even longer ones?

Trying to give me the longest ratios, don't want to be hitting the limiter much if I can help it. Already had 4 standard engines in the car and this one is a lot more expensive, would like to be fast without having to bang it off the limiter. + super high top speed will be a bonus. Superman

To be honest, I really don't find you need to use extra revs with this setup, it is so very drivable using the standard ratios, I would recommend staying with them, although of course it's your choice. Pete could probably vouch for how well they drive with this setup from when he bought Rich's car. Yes

As Welshpug says, I don't think you'll notice a difference between the ratios. Probably see more difference fitting bigger wheels...

Speed and RPM details here: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=123204

I believe a car with the earlier FD will have a VIN containing RFSV instead of RFSW (RFS being the engine code, and the letter after denoting the gearbox).

Some very early phase 2 cars have them as well as the phase 1.
