Depending on your application, cams can provide different lift and 'duration', that is how far the valves open, and how long they open for. Most ordinary cars have cams set up to allow decent midrange torque often at the expense of high end power. The compromise on an n/a engine is that when you cam it, unless you really know what you're doing and spend a fair old bit, you invariably end up pushing the power band way up the Rev band, and sacrificing a lot of the low end and midrange torque inthe process. This on its own makes the car harder to drive daily unless you're always always interested in the right gear to keep the engine on the boil.Essentially though a set of cams mild enough to fit in a stock engine will deliver probably 15hp more at the expense of a little midrange. But if properly mapped you probably won't notice the reduction in midrange... ________________________________________ '97 Black Dturbo 110,000miles: SOLD'99 Ph3 Diablo Gti6 108k RIP '93 106 1.5n/a d: daily hack YAAAAAWN '00 Ph3 Astor GTi6 117k |

thanks for the info will be gradually asking questions as i go recently had my cylinder head looked at got new head gasket head set and bolts ,new timing belt water pump etc also had head pressure tested and apparently a lot of repairs were done ......HOWEVER noticed when i got it back it was running ruff and could here a tapping got a compression test from a fellow pug driver who is on this forum and found cylinder 3 was at 160 psi with the others being at 220,240 was suggested maybe bent valves although when ive been driving it recently it drives great although still taps i think? i dont have anything to compare it to so dnt know if i should just leave it or is this likely to bite me when i least expect it?________________________________________ Innes drummond |

That's definitely something I'd want to investigate further, compression figures should really be within 10% of eachother.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. It may run like this for a long time but theres a change it will drop a valve which WILL lead to a totally destroyed engine the tapping noise i heard plus the lack of compression certainly means a bent valve or two, they garage who did the job have either cocked the timing up or have accidently bent the valves when they refitted the head. Its a fairly heavy assembly, plus these engines are tilted back by 30 degrees, so easy to damage |

Yep, sounds like the garage bent a couple of valves when refitting the head, easily done. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

assuming its not been a previous snapper and assuming the valve guides are not damaged then its the cost of another new head gasket and set of bolts, new belt-i'm not keen to retension/reuse a timing belt plus new valves then labour on top.yes i still have a reconditioned head |

If you are asking someone to do it for you, it would probably be around a £500-600 bill for cylinder head removal, repair and refitting. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

fixing yourself given its only just been apart, £10 a valve IIRC, plus £40 a gasket, £15 belt.plus any valve seat cutting IF required, you can re-use the head bolts as long as they are within spec, as they are not stretch type and should have already been replaced. ________________________________________ need a part number? get on here - http://public.servicebox.peugeot.comBring on the Trumpets. |

Yeah, if you feel confident to do the repair yourself, you could probably get it done for under £100. However, it's whether or not you feel able to undertake the work.________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

no offence mate, but to undertake a job like this on a 6 or any vehicle for that matter requires someprevious experience, its all a basic principal but unless you know what your doing then leave it to someone who has relevant experience. |

aye am happy to do that if a plan is put in place ! i like to have a clear idea of how and when something will be done and from my recent dealings with garages ive found things arent always what they seem ________________________________________ Innes drummond |
