I know it's not a 6, but thought I'd post up on here as it is a 306. Anyway, I've been having cold start issues with my 306 DT (Phase 1) for last few weeks.

Changed the glow plugs a couple of weeks back as assumed that was my cause, but problem still there.

Sometimes it will take ages and numerous attempts to get her started. Other times, like this morning, I turned ignition on, then off after glow plug light went out, and repeated this about four times and it kicked over straight away. Soon as she's warm then she will start without a problem.

I've also been trying to use a mini set of jump leads, one end on glow plug and other on positive battery terminal but don't know if this is even helping as I don't get a spark when I touch the battery terminal.

Couldn't be glow plug relay? Glow plug light comes on ok and goes out. Also, when ignition is switched on there is a faint constant hum which I'm sure is just normal where power is switched on for glow plugs and they're heating up, right?

Worth mentioning that my alternator is buggered as battery light is on faintly constantly but I have another one to fit at the weekend.

Any suggestions would be awesome guys!

check the temp sensor for the system is connected.

also check for air leaks on the leakoff pipes.

weak battery will not help, glow will be diminished by low voltage and following that cranking will also be weak.

Where would temp sensor be?

Not entirely sure what leakoff pipes are but sure it's glow plug related.

Battery not weak, had same problem when I put my mates brand new fully charged Bosch on. Problematic to start when cold.

see when you turn the ignition two clicks..... does the glow plug light go on for half a second then straight off? (instead of the 6/8 seconds like normal)

1.9D estate done this, and it turned out to be a faulty Glow Plug Relay (also replaced one glow plug while i was there)

i was driving about with a jump lead on my boot, had to leave the top engine cover off to get access to the glow plug lead bolt which is connected to all 4 glow plugs

using it to put 12v straight onto my glow plugs, run round start the car then run back and take off the lead. Not very safe but temporary fix.

Your problem sounds more like faulty glow plug, but if you have replaced them then i am not sure

My glow plug light will stay on for about for 6 seconds, which is what makes me think it's perhaps not glow plug relay.

Only thing I remember is I left the ignition on when I changed plugs. Turned battery off, changed the plugs over, and when I went to connect battery back up, it started smoking around glow plug sort of area. So I took terminal straight back off battery and waited and then connected it back up again and it was ok. Went to try to start the car and didn't realise I had left ignition on so it was applied soon as battery was reconnected.

Don't know if that would mean anything or not? Could have killed plug(s)? Or could make no difference?

That wouldn't have made a difference at all mate. No

The leak off pipes by the way are the small pipes which join all the injectors together. They take any excess fuel from the injectors and put it back to tank.

there's a temp sender on the thermostat housing, this tells the relay how long to operate.

I think my glow plugs are actually duff (even though they are only couple of weeks old).

I tried a new thing today. Turning ignition on and waiting for glow plug light to go out. Then I turn ignition off and repeat the process about three or four times.

When I go to start it after the light has gone out the fourth time or so, starts on the button.

Seems to suggest to me that glow plugs are shagged?

For some reason I thought that only the HDI had a temp sensor, whereas I have a 1.9 DT.

I could be wrong though?
