Righto,

With extensive help from a couple of mates on saturday, we got the loom changed again! After some teething issues which ended up as an earth point not mounted, the car fired up and runs fine. HOWEVER....

There is still this temperature issue... (see this thread for details: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=153636)

I wont bore you with all the details as I'm sure most will gouge their eyes out at having to read another thread about me moaning about my car.... but I noticed something when I got to work today... took a video of it (link below)

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/91691146/2013-02-18%2007.54.27.mp4

So when I turn the lights on, the engine runs hotter....

I'm now hoping if I wash my rear windscreen at the same time as pushing the fag lighter, the fans will turn on...?

Now, one of my sidelight bulbs is out (n/s headlight), I don't know exactly when this happened, but I took the bulb out when I was stuck at the side of the road last week waiting for the AA last week (long story, thought i had an airlock, lost the matrix pipes bleed cap, had no tools etc etc) . Is it back-feeding something to do with the temp sensor?

Any ideas anyone? I think I'll just drive home with my lights off tonight as it makes me feel better with the temperature at 90ish rather than 100...!

Anyone? Surely someone's had this issue before?! Before I take it to lynx on the weekend? Sad

Never seen that before ? Tried a different set of dials just to eliminate that as the problem ?

No not yet, I'll add it to the list...
Driving to work this morning, I've also noticed the blowers have an effect on the gauge also, on full the gauge shoots up and off it come back down again....
Another thing I've noticed which that video shows too is that when the engine is off the gauge shows a very different temperature... I'm inclined to think that's the true temperature and that when the engine is running, it somehow starts to affect the gauge reading...

Is it worth checking the earth for the dashboard? All sorts of funny stuff happens because of dodgy earths. Had a quick read of some other posts and the earth should be in the footwell near the accelerator pedal, under the carpet. Can't hurt i guess.

This is definitely an electrical issue whereby when more current is required it ups the current feed to the gauge and therefore the gauge reads higher than it should. As above check ALL Earth points for clean/tight connections.

Another thing I've noticed is the car is s**t to start in the mornings these days despite having a brand spanking new bosch silver top on it as of last weekend...

Complete newbie question, can anyone run off a quick list of the earth points so i can check them over?

Cheers

The main gearbox earth atttaches to the top of the casing, and reaches the nearside rail right undreneath the battery. Struggling to start may be indicative of a corroding earth, I had this on my Rover a number of years ago.

there is also a pair of small earths, one in front and one behind the gearbox earth..

Interior wise i'm not sure. there's an earth for the dash in the drivers footwell under the pedals somewhere, but I doubt you've disturbed that.

Right, all fixed!

Gearbox Earth was so loose I'm surprised it hadn't already fallen off completely!!

I'm a massive plonker for not having checked it earlier.

This thread shoudl hopefully help prevent anyone stupid enough not to check earth points like I did; wierd symptoms (oil gauge & coolant gauge in the end were increasing when additional loads were placed on the battery, ie blower turned to fulll, windscreen wipers on, fogs on, rear window deicer on (that was a biggie!) etc.

Cheers for all your input guys Smile

The end.
