Hi, need some advice regarding my dads S 55 AMG (2003)

The Control Unit has gone (apparantly it 'flooded' and now the car wont start, according to the mechanic)

We only know of mercedes dealership to have the part and be the only ones who can fix it as it needs to be programmed. Getting quoted 1500 for part and 500 for programming.

Dont really want to pay 2000, does anyone know where this part can be gotten cheaper (can provide part no. if required)? And anywhere else it can be fixed/programmed?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Yep, it can be done easily.

Mercedes basically gives you a brand new ECU, which they program to your car with their MB Star tool. This is nice, but this costs WAY too much money!

But you can do it loads cheaper. First of all you will have to find a replacement ECU from the scrapyard or Ebay. Numbers have to match.

Then you have to find someone who is familar with automotive "hacking". There are two ways to do it:

A, if the original ECU is f**ked big time, and the dump on the processor (MCU) is damaged, so as the immobiliser content, he would have to revert the ECU back to virgin state - so for the MB Star tool it would appear as a brand new ECU bought from the dealership. He would need to do all the coding with the manufacturer's MB Star tool, just like the dealer would do.

B, if he could save the MCU and EEPROM content than those jsut simply need swapping over and you are good to go.

Neither too complicated, but for the A option you need someone who actually has an MB Star (not really a problem, novadays clone tools are quite common, so it won't be a hard task), for the B a simple guy would do it Smile

I would advise you to register on DigitalKaos, and write down your problem here:

http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f175/

or here:

http://www.digital-kaos.co.uk/forums/f152/

Telling them the exact situation, with data from the car (build year, model number, performance, ECU number and brand etc..), and ask for someone who could do it locally! There are loads of helpful and smart chaps out there!

I would do it for you if we weren't soo far away from each other...

Which type of S-Class is it? W220 or W221?

Is it a 5.5l or a 5.0l? As Mercedes likes to play with numbers just like BMW.

How many hp does it have?

As above, even i can do that, we can save the chip file and re flash into into the replacement ecu. or we could even just unlock the new ecu.

Looking at the label it seems like it's a normal S55 ECU wih AMG dump loaded, as the original Bosch label is visible under the AMG.

Best would be to save the MCU or Flash data from the AMG ECU, and also the immo EEPROM data. And transfer these to the new ECU.

Remove the AMG label, and find what is lurking underneath! You have to find THAT at the scrappy.

According to my fast search, it has a 5P08C EEPROM which contains all the immo data, and it has an AM29F400BB with the engine maps.

To be honest it's dead easy to do this. Someone local to you can do it in an hour or so (with coffeee). Ask around DK for a suitable guy Wink

If you can't find anything else, here's this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MERCEDES-E-CLASS-W211-03-5-4-MAIN-ECU-IGNITION-KEY-FOB-A1131533979-0261208106-/270962427053?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3f169e84ad

Do the above file transfer, and sell the smart key and ignition switch on Ebay.

Nope, as it's not an engine control unit, but a body control unit.

SAM - Signal acquisition and actuation module

Remove the top cover of the ECU, take a picture of both sides of the PCB and I'll show you which chips are in question.

Can the data from the old ECU still be saved (exported), if the ECU has been flooded? Not sure what the mechanic meant by flooded.

Also how could i tell whether he hasnt just put in a dud ecu and sold the one in there cos never had this problem before. anyway of checking the ECU is the factory fitted one?

Yep, I once had a Seat Toledo and I drained around half a litre of water form the ECU LOL And I was still able to read the MCU content.

If he did it right than no way... If not, you can check the VIN number in the MCU or immo dump, or with a decent diag tool. But I don't think someone would be brave enough to do this! And the S-Class suffers from ECU floods, caused by blocked drain holes.

Just as expected. Simple general Mercedes-Benz 55 ECU (same can be found in S-Class, SL, E, etc.. 55s) with a modified AMG ecu dump loaded.

As it's a quite common ECU, here's the original ECU dump for the normal 55 engine:

http://www.chiptuners.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3738

And here is your own AMG tuned dump:

http://www.chiptuners.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1912&p=5515&hilit=0261208106#p5515

So even if it's not possible to read the ECU you can still save the situation with these dumps above Smile

The number you are looking for is:

0261207611 - Bosch number OR A1131530979 - MB OE number (depends on how the seller advertise the ECU. Some write only one, some write both).

In this case the HW 43.01 has to be the same on the "new" ECU, as that is the hardware revision number. If that does not match the ECU is different inside. Sometimes it's not more than minor, but sometimes it's completely different.

OR if you can find a dedicated S55 AMG ECU:

0261208106
A9995401000
HW 40.02

The MB part number may not be that important, as for example it could be the exact same ECU fitted to a W211 E55AMG, but as it's an E-Class and not an S it would have a different part number.

for the ECU only?

See above. ECU + EZS + smart key - 300quid.

Look for companies breaking S55s.

yea for just the part, but 3 months garuntee and they have matched the part, whereas getting from ebay could be hassle and its not even the right part number so might be headache. but yea i will go on some MB forums and see who's breaking...

breaking a £500 306 is understandable but i dont suspect ill find many people breaking s55s

You would be surprised! These cars have valuable parts, so breaking an accident damaged is a good idea, whereas there's no profit in a 306...

Tell the company that you don't want to pay VAT, and ask for a bit of discount.

The closest match i can find is someone with a A 113 153 12 79, where as mine is A 113 153 09 79

Is this a significant difference?

As said before make sure the Bosch part number and the HW number match. The differetnMarc part number means different software, but you want to replace that with your own, so no problem there.
