I'm wondering has anyone lowered (e.g. cut/welded) their driver's seat base to get their @r$e an inch or two closer to the road?

I am 6'4" and would prefer to sit a little bit lower if it is not a mega engineering task. I want to keep things otherwise OE-looking though.

Think there's a box section across the floor that it bolts too fixing the position

I don't want to cut bits out of the car, was wondering whether it would be possible to cut the seat base and re-weld lower, but so it still bolts into the car in the same way, and looks pretty much the same.

I need to get the vinyl re-done on the sides of the Rallye seats. I was thinking if I got a seat base from a scrapper and got it lowered, then could be installed at the same time as the re-trim.

can't see how you'd do it without hacking into the shell, the runners are already low and not much clearance between the sliding mechanism and the wiring under the seats and what not

there's tons of space under the seat, I'd imagine if you remove the height adjustment it'd be a fair bit lower.

I was about to suggest 5 door subframe but have a feeling that is different.

5dr ones wont fit. the height adjustment bits are actually up inside the base of the seat almost so that wont make a difference. Would be difficult Considering if you did lower it, you would have to relocate the pre tensioner and i would want to be just making new holes for the seat belt considering the amount of strain you put on it when you crash!

Yes, it might be a bit too much of a faff, just an idea to make it more comfortable to drive. I thought someone might have looked at it beforehand but it seems not.

New seats? Ive fitted some rx8 seats and they are slightly lower but also the base slopes backwards slightly more.

How do you get on with the rx8 seats?
The standard gti6 seat are too fat for me and lack that nth degree of rake adjustment to give me my perfect driving position--although I think my incoming momo and boss may rectify that a little bit!

there really good and hold you really well. IMO, a great compromise between standard seats and full buckets. Only thing is, if your rather large, you might be a bit uncomfortable as they are fairly narrow. Ive got a 36" waist and they are perfect for me. a mate of mine who is at least a 42" waist reckons the bases can be a bit uncomfortable when spanking it into a corner. Oh and they look the tits.

if you look at that photo, you can see where ive had to make a bracket to fit it and theres about a 2" gap down the side.

I've also had this thought about trying to lower the original seat. I can't actually fit in the car on the original seat with a helmet on, which made things a bit difficult for track days.

I've now got a Motordrive racing seat in the car which I made my own subframe for, and got it a fair bit lower than the original seat. My original driver's seat is out of the car and I've been trying to work out a way of getting it lower. It's definitely a pain but I reckon it might be do-able, so it's something I might have a look at doing early next year. The original seat is heavy compared to the racing seat though, about 6 kg heavier at the moment but if extra metal is required to make up something to drop the height of the original seat this could easily increase to 8kg.
