Hi all, sorry if this thread is posted in the wrong section but as it stands i have no idea if its an electrical fault or mechanic so....

Basically I bought a Gti 6 Smile on wednesday for an absolute bargain price knowing that it was going to be a project car to get it exactly how i want it, then on the 2hour drive home from high wycombe something happened that i wasnt accounting for... the speedo gauge died Thumbs down . The oil temp, engine temp, rev counter n that are all in working order, its just the speedo & mileage counter that have decided to go. Any ideas on what could cause this?

I bought the car as i say knowing work needed to be done (it was/is work that im confident i can do myself) but this im not really sure on.

Any help is much appreciated and im glad to be back after the untimely and frankly still painful death of my rallye....

If the speedo itself does not move and the mileage display doesn't work either then it could well be the unit itself.

if the speedo doesnt work but the screen is still displaying numbers, it needs a new VSS. If the display has completely died as well, try unplugging the dials and plugging them back in. if a reset doesnt work...im out of ideas there!

Thanks for your help people Smile
The odometer is still displaying, not increasing... and the distance on the trip is the same.
So it would appear to be a VSS, is that a simple job to do or is it gonna be a right pain in the arse?
Any methods on here on how to....?
Is it normal for the VSS to just die or is there likely to be underlying issues to aggravate me further? lol.

Thanks again

very simple, a single electrical connector and a 10mm hex or allen headed screw, you might spill a bit of gear oil.

yep as welshpug said, easy to do. its on top of the diff at the back of the box. can be a bit fiddly to get to especially seeing as you havent got much room to swing a ratchet. i found it easiest to do it from under the car

Are you sure the car is moving? Maybe you're just in heavy traffic or the car is parked? Dunno

Yep, sounds like the VSS.

As said, it's a very simple job, should take you around 20 minutes including jacking and axle standing the car. Yes
