I've noticed almost all turbo conversions go down the route of the T16 type manifold with the turbo sat over the gearbox more or less, why is this? Is it just that there is no room behind the engine?
The TD's seem to have no problem with room, surely a hybrid gti6 flange and sliced td manifold would fit down there? then you could use a td down pipe.
Wouldn't this be a lot cheaper than the big expensive manifold?

Just askingThumbs up
Steve.

there just isnt the space behind the engine, TD uses 'log' type manifold and very small turbos

TD downpipe would be way to restrictive

Are all the XD engines single cam? I know my old HDi DTurbo was and the single cam head leaves a fair bit of room behind it compared to a twin cam, plus the manifold is a bag of s**t, if you want anything half decent you'd need a lot more space.

not sure, my hdi is single cam but it was still tight behind the head. it'd have been miles easier to do otherwise. then again it wasn't hugely hard but space is so tight you end up removing quite a bit. inlet out and engine off the top mount to push it forward enough for removing all the manifold and exhaust studs.

some people do it from underneath, atleast once it's rocked forward you can see what's what. bad job though. 4hrs approx but some head scratching took the time too

i suppose if you were to turbo a GTi6'd 205 then it would be a little easier as theres a little bit more

space between engine and bulkhead, but not much more!

even the 406 8v turbo conversion has clearance issues and thats still with a small turbo, iirc you

have to extend the bottom mount by 10mm, which isnt an ideal way to do it

...and on the 306 you have to cut (i did) the 'rib'that runs along the bulkhead for the turbo to clear

even after doing that you could only just get your fingers between them

There are flange conversions to fit td04's to the td manifolds using the std down pipe ect.
So space is tight but not impossible.
Mmmmmmm.
I was looking at the other thread re the s16 turbo and he runs a stock bottom end/headgasket up to 250bhp on low boost.
That would do....wouldn't it, if it was a 1.8 bottom end?
